Gets first hand story of her husband’s death in battle for Hong Kong Handed his wallet to Rfmn. Howard Marshall to care for shortly after he was mortally wounded but Japs confiscated it later Mrs. E. Henderson, daughter of Mrs. Lena Phillips, 72 Albert St. S., Lindsay, has just learned firsthand from a veteran of the Hong Kong incident how her husband met his death in the closing hours of the battle for that stronghold.
Going to Hong Kong in 1940, Pte. Henderson served with the garrison there until he was mortally wounded by Jap fire during the closing days of the campaign. However, his wife in this country was innocent of the fate which had befallen him until 1942, when she received a telegram which told her that he had ‘died from bullet wounds’. Doubting the accuracy of this report she kept her hopes high throughout in the anticipation that when the war was ended she would learn that her husband was still alive.
When Rfmn. Howard Marshall arrived home the other day he called on the family and gave them their first true account of what had happened and confirmed the fact that Pte. Henderson had died of wounds. A particularly sad part of the story he had to relate was the fact that shortly before he died Pte. Henderson had given him his wallet to care for and send to his loved ones here. It never reached him. [cut off]
