F|O M.A. Henry in the thick of Nazi flack

With Bomber group overseas – An attack on Mannheim stands out most vividly in F|O M.A. Henry’s mind as he looks back on the tour of “ops” he has completed.

Bomb aimer with the Ghost Squadron, the Lindsay, Ont., flier, who enlisted in Toronto in 1942, is now an instructor in the Radio division of the Bomber Group.

His operational record includes four trips to Berlin, and sorties against Frankfurt, Leipzig, Bochum and Dusseldorf, but the Mannheim job was the “shakiest do” of the lot. His aircraft was coned by searchlights for nearly five minutes before it was able to elude them and during this period the plane was peppered with flak, which put one engine out of order and ripped 48 holes in the aircraft. It was some task to land the plane at an emergency airport in Britain.

His wife, the former Irene Kennedy, resides in Lindsay.
