Hold High the Torch

The following splendid poem written in Holland by Capt. Bruce Maidens, formerly of the Victoria Trust & Savings Co. Staff, appeared in the Canadian Army Newspaper and will be read with interest by the many friends of Captain Maidens in this district:

O, valiant hearts of yesteryear,

that sleep in Flanders Fields.

We are the dead that caught the torch

that failing hands did fling

Arise, brave warriors, from thy sleep

and take us by the hand.

Strangers we, that needs must sleep

far from our native land.

What say ye now, O soldiers bold,

did we break faith or not?

And will our slumbers be like yours,
broken by sound of shot?

Like you we gave our all that freedom

still might reign,

That shadows of war might never darken

our fair and wide domain.
