Sometimes the left hand never knows what the right hand is doing; that goes without saying.
All one has to do is to refer back to the year 1949.
It seems that the town ordered a new fire truck and, only after careful consideration, council members decided that their current driver, Jack Graham, would be too old to handle the new machine.
Considerable discussion took place over the matter.
There were some members of council who felt he should be given a chance to prove himself with the new truck.
Others thought it time they replaced him with a younger person and what better time than the present. After all they were getting the new truck and had the perfect excuse to strike while the iron was hot.
They decided to inform him of their decision and advised the Town Clerk to notify him immediately by registered mail.
Graham was quite incensed with the council and said that they didn't know what they were talking about. (Prior to driving the big engine he had driven the ladder truck for many years.)
Apparently he had been making every effort to get off the department for at least four years and that the town council was in possession of his official resignation all that time.
I guess that is was just a matter of cutting through a lot of red tape before they became aware that such a letter was in existence!
In the final analysis, Graham had the pleasure of having a good laugh over the entire matter.
