Not only good things, but they have thrown in over 700 miles of constructed road, and the expenses of surveying, which to‘ gether when finished will have co.~.t the country 31 million dollars more. This has been done, too, when much better terms could have been got frotn a Syn- dicate equally as respectable. Their reasons for the course they have follow- cd are not traceable to any higher mo- tive than their statement that it was the best they could do in the circum- stances. lf so, why did they not try to make better terms, which it is plain they could have done by many millions. To many it would seem that no other reason can be given than that they'hud committed themselves to the Syndicate before the meeting of Parliament, trust- ing to the slavish obscquiousnesa of their followers to ratify what they had so recklessly done. They were not dis- appointed iu this, for with a party com- posed of such men as the Tory M. R's they were sure of an unquestioning sup- port, and have obtained it, to the detri- ment of the whole Dominion. The country has got rid of 22 million acres of the best- of its land; the 31 million dollars are expended or will be before it can hand over the 700 miles of'finishcd road to the Syndicate, and is in for the payment of 25 millions more. All this, too, by the men who had the address to get themselves into office on the faith that they would effect wonders in ad- vancing" the material interests of the country. The Dominion is sinking in- to an abyss of debt by their manipula- tions; taxation is higher than ever; a National Policy has been inaugurated, robbing the agriculturists to enrich a few manufacturers. This last act i.~ worse, if" possible, than the N. 1’., and bodes no good for the future of the country. Generations yct unborn will curse their advent into office. Who are to blame so much as those whose votes foisted the present Government into of- fice once more, while their damaging record in connection with the Pacific scandal was yet fresh in the public mind ? They are now to reap as they have sowed. They will have acres to cultivate yearly to pay the cost of their simplicity in lending an ear to men who had cut a disgraceful figure in the an~ mile of the past. Had they been con- tentcd to leave the management of the affairs ofthc country to Mr. Mitckcnzic's cabinet, they would have saved millions of outlay and been spared the sad re- flcction of tl-ansmitting their property to their children saddled with an en- cumbrance of national debt that will grind them to the dust. What they have got for their vote in 1878 they can only in part realize, and what is to dread now is that there are fresh bur- dens being concocted by the same par- ties to complete the reward duo them for their errors. ‘33: The Trent Valley Canal. The Globe of the 14th inst, in its rc- ply to the l’ctcrborough Ifcvt'ew’s com- ments on its remarks with reference to the Trent Valley Canal, says: “ It is easier toscc the advantages that the Trent Valley scheme has over other projects than to hope what means can be found to begin and finish the work ; ” adding that the ratification of the bar- gain with the St. Paul Syndicate will cause such a drain tipon the resources of the Dominion for years to come that it will be difficult to provide funds whcmwitli to further smaller but, pro- _ portionatcly, far more important cntcr~ prises, and regretting that “ the money which might have been used in. com- pleting the Trent Valley work will be I paid out for the coal, wood, grease and labour necessary to operate trains through the wilderness." It is gratify- ing to find our Tomato contemporary. who was' at first thought to be inimi- cal to the canal, thus candidly admit- ting its feasibility and, inferentially, its superiority to rival projects; and we of selected land, exemption from taxes years to come, a vast quantity of steel rails at cost price which \vcre bought when prices were low, the land for the road and for all works contracted therewith free of cest and notlinble to taxation in the future, is now an accomplished fact, notwith- standing all the effortsmadc by the Op- position members, the cxprcssion ofpub- at public meetings and have they given the Syndicate all these rest in the comfortable liotcl stables, their owner, Mr. Boyd, of Bobcaygeon, to their new home, which we understand will he on the island in Pigeon Lake. The cattle were eleven in number and were all Herefords except one, a bean- tiful Durham cow, which cost $500, and a like sum was paid for an equally beautiful Hereford, a breed that is fast coming into favour in Canada and by some is thought to surpass the Short horns in valuable qualities. Mr. Boyd paid $3,000, or nearly $273 each, for them young calves at that; and it was the bnwling of the mother of one of the latter, which had been put into the sta- blc, that first attracted our attention. Besides the cattle, there arrived a pair of turkeys, a. cross between the wild and lame, for which 'Mr. Boyd no doubt paid a. high figure, and which are so much larger than the common sort that (we are told) one of the same breed has been known to weigh as much its forty pounds dressed. Though Mr. Boyd was probably not actuated entire- ly by philanthropic motives in purchas- ing the stock above mentioned, he still deserves the thanks of the community; for he could scarcely have invested the same sum of money in any other way that would be productive of its widely spread benefit. Some of the cattle were bought of Mr. Stone, of Guelph. and the rest. from other tinted breeders in tho some locality, and we regret that we did not get a good look at them by broad daylight before they left the vil- lage on Thursday morning. 1% Condensed Items. â€"\\'honping-cough is very prevalent in Port Ilopc just now, in some cases whole families being afflicted with it. .â€"Thc Montreal Typograplilcal soci- ety is forming a benevolent fund for the benefit of its members. The uncontaminated snow lies unalter- ed in appearance from when it began to fall in October. In many instances it is not what the lumbermcn require; but, taken as a whole, these past. four years have not seen such a. regular wi'nter for carrying on work in the woods. It is admitted by all engaged in the lumber business that their gather of logs this year will be exceptionally large. Our tnining interest is still anxiously waiting the action hoped to be taken by the local legislature. Should that body give assistance to railway enter. prise through this iron locality, I am led to believe that it is not spasmodi- cally the Work will be done, as some of the immediate neighbouring lines were constructed. One of our most enterprising settlers since the opening of these back town- ships, Mr. W. II. Palmer, has sold his 200 acre farm to Me. Rufus Hall, of Mariposa, and has gone east again to New Brunswick, his former residence for many years. Mr. Jabrz Thurston's Lindsay gang of lumbcrnten have nearly completed their task in here, and. will soon leave the neighbourhood. For some time to come the question of the greatest importance to this back country will be the Land Company‘s affairs, and how all our townships of Ilaliburton will be absorbed. should 9 dissolution of the county take place. One township, Snowdon, has takcnn bold step in the matter -, their success is somewhat problematical, but, the in- itiative has to be taken, and all honor to those who makca bold stroke for their own and their neighbor's welfare. 5 l i l m Bury’a Green. Esrmtrsmusxazâ€"Thc fourth entertainment in aid of the ll‘cnelun Frills Mcchanics' Institute will be given in lngrnm's bollon Wednesday eveningr next, and will“ it- is expected, be the best, so far, of' tho-season. as our village amateurs will be assisted by a number ofwcll known vocalists from Lindsay, whose names can. be ascertained by re- ferring lo-thc bills already printed and posted. The resistance which has been so strenuously offered by the-Liberal party to the iniquitous scheme which has been consummated by the Government and ratified by its rel-vile majority, has been seen from the course of the discussion to be quite futile so far as the vote of the present Parliament is concerned. It by no means follows, however, that on this account the. effort: of the Oppositimi has been wholly an abortive one. It was clearly the duty of the loyal Oppo- tion, if it would at. all deserve the name of being loyal to the interests of the people, tolcavc no stone unturned to delay as long as possible the infamous proceeding which was so. clearly a betrayal and .wholesale surrender. of. the rights as well as the resources of the people. .No one can deny that at the} least. the very material difference between the terms of the foreign and the Canadian syndi- cates respectively has been won'c than thrown away. Hon. W. Macdougall, who simul ted some independence at the outset of the debate but who un- der some mysterious influence fell into line again, will now have an opportunity to say by this transaction, as he did long ago about the Litcrcolonial, now many millions of the people’s money have been “thrown into the sea " by Sir John and his fellow traitors. Many of the straight Tories tool: exception to several of the flagrantly objectionable features of the contract as the discussion proceeded, but not one of them had the courage of his convictions to the extent ‘ of recording his vote against the bargain and sale. The prolongation of the dis- ! cussion by. the Opposition was not a factions resistance but a protest against a. public wrong, and less than that would have been less than their bounden and undoubted duty to the people. Beisidcs the delay has given the electors an op- portunity to protest against the sorrow l der both by public meeting and petition, a popular protest. which we are convinc- ed will be followed up by a much more effective condemnation at the polls at the next election.â€"-â€"Kinquon Whig. - l Messrs.
