Fitzgerald brought us a live Caterpillarâ€"a hairy one, black at both ends and brown in the middleâ€"which was found crawling about out of doors, and informed us that several others of the same kind had also been seen. It is certainly an extraordinary time of year for such insects to be taking exer- cise in the open air, and how they man- age to keep their numerous feet from getting frozen we - should very much like to know. I’ttESESTATION.â€"In the Presbyterian Trails. The tree is now a npling some eight feet in height, and it is in lull foliage and growing rapidly. it is legu- minous. and very distinctly shows the characteristics 0! the minmsa, or sensi- tive plant. Regularly every evening, about the time the “ chickens go to the roost," the tree goes to roost. The leaves fold together, and the ends of the tender twigs coil themselves up 1i .0 the tail ofu well conditioned pig. Alter one of the twigs has been strok- cd or handled, the leaves move uneasily and are in a sort of mild commotion for a minute or more. All this was known about the tree, but it was only yester- day that it was discovered that the tree has in it much more life and feeling than it had ever before been credited A large stock of John Whyte 8; Co]: No. 3 DIAMOND STEEL PLOUGIIS, guaranteed to clean, or no sale. A few years ago a regular crusade ivaa preached n, gainst the credit system, which some one said was, next to whi~ky, the great- est evil with which Canada was cursed; but whether, now-a-days, the C. P. R. Syndicate is inferior to either of them remains to be provcii, and the chances are that, a few years hence, it will be pronounced the worst of the three. Messrs. McDougall & Bran-Ion have done a large and steadily increasing business; but after four years’ experi- ence they pronounce the credit system “ a complete failure," and have thch- forc wisely resolved to make an attempt, at least, to abandon it. Of the thou- sands of merchants who have endeavor. ed to make the change contemplated by our young and enterprising firm the great majority have failed to do so; but at few have succeeded, and what has been done once may be (lone again. The one thing iieedful in charming from the credit to the cash system of business is a general and obvious reduction of piiccs, and of this Messrs. McDougall and Brandon appear to be aware; for immediate friends and those in some ol our adjoining townships. It must be borne in mind that Mr. Peek at the last election carried everything by storm in this range of back townships; but it must be candidly admitted that he is not. going to carry such a majority again. It is a well known fact that Mr. Peck has very much sliglited many of his sup- porters (Reformcrs) during his term of office in many of those townships, and given all his patronage to Mindeo and its vicinity. He has been warned of these proceedings, and I am confident t, if Mr. Fell would so tnodify his c scrvative views as to promise to vore for the Streams and Territory Bills, if elected, he would carry eight out of ev- l‘l'y ten votes in this range of townships. I am giving the voice of a good many in what I say, so that too sanguine a view should not be indulged in by those who are too confident. At the appoint- ment of our delegate to the. convention it should also be borne in mind that Mr. Pcck's name was never mentioned by any one in the room. Mr. Fell hasl many friends among us who know him personally as well as by repute, some of dren were too young to undertakeâ€"or perhaps to think ofâ€"nn address, so that there was no need for a formal re- ply; but they were thanked for their kindly gift, which was a. free will offer- ing by the little ones, whom she has taught. for upwards oftwo years, and who wished to evince the affection with which they regard her. r It] UNICIPAL lameness-In the town- ship of Fcnelou the figures at. the close of the pull were as follows :â€"For reeve, Daniel, 298; Palmer. 84. In the township of Vcru- lam the move and deputy were returned by neclauiation, and Messrs. Braidcn, Thurston and Litiigow were elected as councillors. In Somervilic Mr. John Fell. Sr., was elected rccve, and the n 0 councillors are Messrs. Henry Graham, Pct-due, Romney and Suddaby. In Liiids:iy Mr. J. \V. Wallace was elected mayor; Col. Deacon, more; Mr. John , lluclennuu, first deputfi, and Mr. Geo Inglc, second deputy. ’Tlic councillors and a china cup and saucer. The chil. 3": new brick hotel south of the river, is still in the hands of the pascrers ters. It resented the operation of its removal to the best of its ability. Ar- riving at his residence about the time the tree had been transplanted, the gen- tleman found the house in grand com- motion. On asking what was up he was told that they had transplanted the tree according to orders and the opera- tion had “ made it very mad." Hardly had it been placed in its new quarters before the leaves began to stand up in all directions like hair on the tail of an angry cat, and soon the whole plant was in a quiver. This could have been on- dured, but at; the same time it gave out an odour most pungent and sickening â€"just such a smell as is given off by rattlesnakcs and many other kinds ol Snakes in summer when tested. This odour so filled the house and was so sickening that. it. was found necessary to open the doors and windows. It was fully an hour before the plant calmed down and folded its leaves in peace. 1!. would probably not have given up the fight even then had it not been that. its time for going to roost had arrived. The train approached the bridge by a curve, so that the man conld not see his dau- gcr. The bridge is too narrow to per- mit a person standing on one side 'till a train should pass, and it was impossible for him to reach the other side before the train would overtake him. To jump from the bridge was certain death, as the rushing waters of the river yawncd beneath. The only course upon was to clutch the outer board. and, suspended between life and death, await. the re- sult. This the man did, and the train, which could not be stopped, came thun- dering on. The conductor, rccollccting that the stops of the Pullman car were very low and would probably strike the man's licnd, rushed to the rear of the train and uncoupled the car. which, by thc.pronipt notion of the brakes, was conspiracy to commit unlawful acts, and the Courts of the country are to decide whether it is lawful to tittilatc to an undue extent the olfactory nerves of a boarder who i‘c'fuscs to vacate when desired.
