Mr. Fitzger- ald in the chair. By-luw read the third time and passed. A deputation of the resident clergyman waited on the coun- cil in reference to the illegal sale of li- quor on Saturday nights and Sundays, and presented the following ‘ PETITION. To the Council of the village of Fen- rlnn Falls. The petition of the undersigned humbly shcwcth : That the liquorlaw is openly and systematically broken in this village by the sale of liquor on the Lord's Day : that it is the duty of the council to en- force the law through their oilicer, and that the object. of this petition is (imply to call the attention of the council to this violation of the law : that. it is not only the duty but. the interest. of every one owning property in the village to have the lay; enforced, since lawlessness and imumrality are calculated to keep from the village that class ofinlmbitauts which we much need to build up its prosperity. We desire to say that. we have no wish to interfere with the law- l'ul business of the hotel keepers. but. only to have Sabbath desecration, aris- ing out. of this crying evil. stopped; and your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray. sobriquet of “ Squirrel Skin."4but it is believed by a course of action similar to that. of which he is said to have been guilty in Muskoka. usnaggiinoiuh. ' Painful as it is to a vast majority of the professors of the christian religjon, and prone as some of them are to deny it, there can be no doubt that there is a greater tendency to disregard the ob- servance of the Sabbath than there was some few years ago; and this tendency ought to be opposed becauseâ€"even if no higher reason existedâ€"there never was a time since the one day's rest out of seven was instituted, when it was as much needed as it is now. The excuse urged for working (in Sundays is that. the rest of the week does not afford suf ficicat time for the transaction of busi- ness; but a moment's thought will con- vince any man, even if he is of such castriron constitution that his ferh'ngs do not. that the harder he is driven from Monday morning until Saturday night, the greater is the need, if he value mental and physical health, for him to spend twenty-four hours in rest, recreation, and religious Observances. We are quite aware that a great many of our readers will objct’to the word “rvchutiou”; and we shall not; find‘ fault with them if they object; on the. only reasonable ground that. it. is ex- tremely diflicult to draw the line be tween what. are and what. are not pleas- ure and amusements that may be inno- cently indulged in on Sundays, and it any be permitted it is impossible to say how far the admission may be stretch ed. This point, on which there are many‘difiizrcnt and widely divergent 0- pinions, we have no wish to discuss; but all'who do not desire the total ab.)- lition of the Sabbath agree that with rare exceptions no ordinary avocations ought. to be engaged in on that day. Consequently if, as alleged, our village hotel keepers sell liquors, and if, . 5 ap- pears to be the case, the proprietors ol the Min-,2] Louise intend to run excur- sions on Sundays, tho former must. exâ€" pect such action as has very proprrly been taken (see council proceedings) by our resident clergymcn, and the latter will chill the welcome the people of Fcnelon Falls were prepared to extend to them. thcn ministers of the Gus- pcl dilfcl', as we know they do, as to what. is lawful on the Sabbath day. it. is not. for us to invade their province and offer our bcnightcd scculuropinion, be- yond thisâ€"that it would be a wolul mistake to devote it. to work. and there- fore wc object to anything that. tends in that direction. A distinguished partic- ipator in the French Revolution, but we. forget for the moment which one it was. said, “ If God did not exist it would be. necessary to invent. him," meaning that without some. greater restraint. than more human laws mankind would run into all kinds of exccssgx‘; and, in our opinion. if Sunday did not exist it would be necessary to institute it; for under the present high pressure state of exist.- cnce to which all who have to earn their living are condemned, cascspf insanity and suicide would increase at a fearful rate it the day of rest. were abolished. About four miles out. from the. town a serious ob~tuclc has presented it- self in a boggy swamp. 'I‘hc tics and rails had been laid through the swaunp, and the construction train umdc one trip over it. when the road bud sunk down in two places. The holes are each of about the length of a car and a half. in one of them, the east. ouc, lilty car- loads of filling material has been cmp‘ tied and in the other one ton loads. '1'hé’iholcs are only a few rods apart. On Monday afternoon Mr. J. G. Mach- liu, Chief Engineer of construction, and Mr. Direct- visited this place to inspect and determine the bust lltoLllm‘l at over» coming the difficulty. It was Iiaiud that in the first hole the truck had sunk :1- bouta lootundcr the water, and had there. apparently, found a bottom, and it was decided to try the clicct 01 more stoncnnd gravel. At the second hole. in which the smaller amount of matcriv a1 had been cmptiod. the truck had sunken lower. This one had the ap- pcaraucc of being the worst place, as the piece of track h'aa disappeared, and the earth at. the side has been heaved up as if by a sumll earthquake. At this place, if it. cannot. bu filled with stone and gravel, timber will be sunk to form a bottom, and the hole will then be filled up with atom: and gravel. The swamp is very soft at this place. and where the first sink hole is was the nat- ural bed of a creek. A caual is bciu'.r excavated at. this place to carry the Wil- tcr of the creek and the accumulated dead water away Irom the road, so that it will not souk through the road bed or wash against it in the spring seasons.â€" I’clcrbarough Revlon.
