I gave Toms orders, and Bessie is waiting to show him in here." “ But, oh, Sidneyâ€â€"nnd the little fra- gile ï¬ngers seized ’Sidnry's arm with nervous force, and the frightened eyes were raised eagerly to her faceâ€"“ If he should be recognisedâ€"â€"ifâ€"†“Chrissie, is it likely that he would run that risk?" A quarter of an hour passed, and Sid- ney's heart uched at the pain on the poor wan face resting on her shoulder, at the agony in the dim blue eyes which never left the face of the pretty china clock. they were very stillâ€"~so still that the sound of it coal dropping from the grate made almost a startling noise in the dainty room; but, attentively as they listened, the heavy snow muffled the ap- proach of the fly effectively; and they heard no soqu until a sudden loud peril ut the bell rang through the silent house. Chrissie started to her feet, a. wild look of (~:\g-iriiess upon her face, and, strong n..w in her intense excitement, turned towards the door, when Sidney’s hand upon her arm arrested her steps. “ Chrissie, you forget,†she said grave- ly and impressively; “it is Doctor Au- derson who is coming." For a moment Chrissie. looked at her, as if inclined to rebel ; then, without a word, she turned and went back to her swat. .Sidiiey stood still, waiting in the c--ntre of the room. There was a minute of‘iutense breathless silence. The steps approaching the boudoir were deadened by the heavy velvet-pile carpet, even as the carriage wheels had been muffled by the snow, and it was the opening of the door which ï¬rst broke the stillnessâ€"the opening of the door, the jingle of the brass rings of the portiere as Bessie push- ed it aside, her vorce announcing-â€" “ Doctor Anderson l" Then, from behind the portiere came a. slender, spare, bent gray-haired man, warmly muffled up from the cold in great cost and wrapper, wearing a short; gray beard and spectacles: and Sidney went forward to meet him with a graceful tree-ting. †I am glad to see you. Doctor Ander- son," she said clearly. “ You have had it very cold journey, I am afraid." CHAPTER XXVI. The meeting which Sidney lisd dread- ed so much was over and to her intense rt lief, Christine had borne the excitement better than she had expected. She neither fainted nor wept, but, in an emo. tion too deep for words or for tears, clung with both her arms round her brother's neck ; and, though Frank was shocked beyond measure at the terrible change in his sister, he was used to self-control and to dissimulation now, and he was able to hide from her how grieved and moved he was. “ You will not leave us, Sidney 'l" he said, looking up suddenly as Mrs. Daunt moved over to the door. “ We have no secrets from youâ€"our best friend." “ No, I am not going," she answered, in her soft voice. “I um just going to keep watch while you and Chrissie discuss your plans and hopes." “ Hopes 3 ' be repeated half bitterly. “ They will soon be disposcd of, Sidney, because I have none." “ Do not say so," she said earnestly, Coming back to the ï¬reside, and standing there, Very gruevful and attractive in her rich black dress. “You ought not, Frank! But I thought that, if you told me something of your moxements on that night, it might help us. “ No use, no use i" he groaned. “Ali, Sidney, what have you done?
