Mr. Campbell did not hear; of Mr. Smith’s presence in the village in time to see him. but he took the train to Lindsay and met him there, and afterwards communicated with the County attorney and the police. It. has since been ascertained that Thomas and Robert Smith, after getting the money. went towards Lindsay as far as. the res- idence of Mr. Hall, whom they hired to drive them to Lindsay, where they put up at the Duly House, and probably I left by the early train on Wednesday. as they mysteriously disappeared. It is thought that some pcr:0n yet. uu knowu drew up the note, as the writing was much better than that of either of the Smiths. The Scheme lay in abeyance some years un- til revivcd by the late Sheriff Conger of Peter-borough. Whilst the great North- West was held by the Hudson’s Bay Company, one \‘CS:CI annually was sul- ï¬cicnt to carry all the fur harvest to England, and by proper timing, through the. very difï¬cult. navigation of Hud Son’s Bay; and the necessity for the opening of this magniï¬cent water-way was not felt then as it is now, and will ‘ be in the future, when millions on mil- lions of bushels of grain from that coun- , try will require outlets to the seaboard. , The original Welland Canal was only a ditch for small boats. Part of the orig- inal canal at Merritton is shown to strangers as a curiosity when compared . with the magnificnnt works that exist : there now. The Welland Canal is twen- ty-tivc miles long, with no natural facil- ities for its construction. It was car- , ricd over a rocky mountain, and had other engineering difficulties to content] with such as do not exist on the Trent (,l rand River nearly as long as the canal For many years the canal has required the assistance of the Welland railway, which was built. on purpose to carry its surplus traflic. Whoever lives fifty years hence at the city of Fenclon l’alls. will no doubt be showing to strangers what we. consider our magnif- iccnt loeks as toys compared with what will then exist.
