It. is '10 thy 32. feet, 4 feet hold, ZU horse power engine, geared 6 to 1, thus giving 100 horse power strain on the cable. It Weighs thirteen tons, and is propelled in the water by two side paddle wheels. “'hen moving over a portage these and the rudder will be raised by means of screws. The boiler is horizontal, swung .on a pivot, so that the water will re- main level when ascending or decending an elevation. One man operates the whole affair from the wheelhouse. A large concourse of spectators from towu and country witnessed the launch on Silver Lake a few days ago. The cable was made fast to a tree, the steam turn- ed on and the Alligator, as the craft is :aptly called, crawled slowly to the wa- ter's edge," into which it glided, and sev- eral trial trips demonstrated the com- plete success of the design. The cable ‘was again tnadc fast 'to a tree and the wessel crawled out of the water backvto the dockyard, where it remained until yesterday, when steam was again made, and by the help of the trees along the street the “Alligator†crawled at no .snail's pace to the G. T. It. depot, to be shipped to the Muskoka country, where its practical work .is to begin in tugging logs and timber for its owner. The journey to the depot was made the pres- ence of anothr large crowd, and both builders and owner received the warm congratulations of scores of friends on the complete success of the whole affair. 04* Duelling in France. A Toulon, France, newspaper printed :nn article headed “ Olliccrs and Dads " that. gave offence to the garrison at that place, and one of the ofï¬cers, M. Mar- .daine, called at the ofï¬ce of the paper .and slapped the face of M. Pyanct, the editor. There was a duel, and the edi- ttor was slightly wounded. Another oï¬i- -cer tried to get on a ï¬ght with the man who had written the article, M. Lescu- vdier, but was unable to get him to the scratch, whereupon the-ofï¬cers composed .an article calling all the writers on the paper “curs †except .thc editor who - had fought. This was printed in an opposition paper, and the “ curs †promptly challenged all the ofï¬cers. The colonel put his men under arrest, That; they will be free in a fortnight, and lthen there will be a dozen or more duels, ibesidcs two which M. A rather curious episode in natural history occurred on board the French steamboat Abd-el-Kadcr during the pas- sage from Marseilles to Algiers. Just as the vessel was about two hours out the sky became quite black with swal- lows. It was then about six o'clock in the evening. The birds alighted in thousands on the. sails, ropes and yards of the Abtl-elKadcr. The birds were cri- dently fatigued after a long flight, and allowed themselves to be caught by the. people of the ship, who gave them a wel- come reception and provided them with iood, which they enjoyed heartily. The little winged strangers remained all night on the vessel. and in the morning at seven o'clock the whole flock made for land. â€"â€" -« ~--â€"â€"-~-»o o 0- ~- l’almyra.
