There are stories of stars that have flamed into brilliance and ï¬nally disap- peared as if they had been consumed in a ccrllsgratiou, while the earth takes and volcanic eruptions which shake our planet announce the actual survival of forces and agencies that make possible the meet ter- rible cataclysm, and seem to suggest for the future disturbances as profound and for- midable as any that ever occurred in any past age. It is in this connection that we are led to consider some recent utterances on the snb~ ject of the enormous volume of infirmmable gas stored up in the crust of the earth and recently broughs into use for the most im- portant economical purposes. There is an area of country in Pennsylvania,“’eet Virgin- ia, Ohio andjpcrhaps other States, embracing many thousand square miles, which is under- laid with the most extraordinary and ex- tensive stores cf coal oil and coal gas. In the past twenty-ï¬ve years oilhas been taken out to the extent of millions on millions of barrels, while gas is escaping at the mm. as it has been recently estimated, of l,000,0’.‘0,- 000, cubic feet each day. The flow of both oil and gas is so great that the belief is war- ranted that the supplies, notwithstanding the extraordinary daily depletion, are stilleuor- mous. Beyond the existence of this gas and oil and of the coal beds,‘ which also nnderly the greater portion of the United States, we know actually nothing of subterranean con- ditions ; but if we can assume the presence at great depths in the earth, of ï¬re or of snfli )leut heat-making agencies to operate on the coal beds we may well imagine that by the action of such heat the petroleum is distilled from the coal and the gas is, at out for husband “‘1 Wile 7†feel an intense ion in to he 06 ;and con- “ hatihflhhhged !
