Fen- elon Falls contributed several cases, and many of our villagets were present, either as witnesses or to hear the trials. The grand Jury found “ no bill." a- gainst Craig A’. Austin, mill owners, of Kinmount, for cutting up Boyd Co's logs, and also against John Thomson for obstructing Constable Nt-vison, of this village, in the discharge of his duty. Thomas Fell, charged with robbing his employer, was found guilty and sen- leuced to one yt-ar in the central prison lu the suit against Green-c & Ellis by Wm. Lace for $2,000 compensation for the loss of his lingers while working in their mill, the Judge said that the Fac- tory Act, under which the suit Was brought, compelled mill owners to cover belts, cogwhcels and other dangerous gearing, but not the saws, and he ac- cordingly gave judgment for the de- fendants. Every year. as soon as the shooting season sets in, the papers begin to reap a crop oi ghastly paragraphs relating to more or less seriou~ accidents resulting from the careless use ul firearms. This year appears to be no exception to the rule, lor already we have sccn accounts of several casualties, and the Gazette now has one of its own-and u fatal one too-t0 record. As usual, the Yankees are coming over l to hunt in our Canadian wilds. a party , of them having passed through the Falls over a week ago. The iufiu-x ofl rather than for sport, was stopped-but not before it had been permitted far too longâ€"-by the law forbidding the ex‘ portation of the cal-cases of deer to the United States, which has since been supplemented by an enactment limiting the number to be killed by any hunter or hunting party in a single season. In additioo to this, every person who has not resided in the Province of Ontario i or the Province of Quebec for three months previous to the season for deer shooting, must provide hitnsclf with a l permit from the Crown Lands Depart- ment, which costs ten dollars. If the indiscriminate slaughter that was lor-Y nicrly permitted-or, rather, non pro-- vented-had been allowed to continue. the deer, except in very remote districts, would have been almost exterminatcd by this time, and the laws for their protection should be obeycdl and enforc- ed by all true lovers of sport. As the hunting season apprOaches, not a few of our villagers begin to pre- pare for action, and some of them arc generally in the woods waiting for sun- rise ou the morning of the eventful day. On Monday last. the 14th, Messrs. Geo. Wliissile, E. R. Edwards, Thomas Rob- son und F. R. Bailey went north by the afternoon train. their destination being Clear Lake, situated between the town- ships ol Eyre and Havelock, and about twenty-seven miles beyond the village of Haliburton. Each mun had a Win- chester repeater, and they took with them four hounds, as eager for the fray as their owners, two canoes, tents and bedding. and a good stock of provisions, as they will not be home nutiil Thursday or Friday next. Two of them being quaintcd with the locality, and the third a. good all-’round man, they will no doubt get any amount of venison, and. when the annual distribution takes place in Mr. Edwards's driving shed, a fat haunch is tolerably certain t0 be sent ever to the otiice ot'thc Gazette. â€"____-__-â€"g-â€" Address and Presentation, _____ On the eve of the departure of Mr. James Thompson and family for the North-west, a few days» ago, about sixty of their neighbours visited them at their rcsidenm: in Lamb’s- settletnc.|t, Verulam, and. presented the following Dear Mr. tQ' Mrs. Thompson and fumily,â€" l It is with pleasure on. one hand, and l 4m PLASS l\l\A\\‘l.\‘Gâ€"â€"-\‘.\I.UE 80.
