Carpets and Oil-Cloths, N o. 9 Keenan’s Block, Kent Street, Lindsay. Mmuomsr ANSIVERSABYcâ€"Tbc Fenelon Falls )lethodist church Anni- versary willbo held on Sunday, the 220d inst. when sermons will be preach- od morning and evening by Rev. Wm. Buchanan, of Brighton, and on Christ- mas thy, when the usual tea and enter- tainment will be given. Posters cou~ taining full particulars will be issued next week. 38‘ All kinds of watch and clock re- pairing done at it. J. Frost's “ The Jew- cller.” Fans Laurensâ€".Prof. Campbell, who has been at the Falls upwards of a week, will deliver a free lecture on phre- nology to all over 15 years of age in Ingram's hall this evening, and will leave on Monday. He has “. bumped ” n great many heads, and imparted much valuable information to young people as to the businesses or other pursuits in which they are most likely to succeed. [22!" Just arrived, a beautiful assortment of Gold brooches, at R. J. Frost's, -‘ The Jeweller." “'INTERrâ€"From present appearances winter has come to stay, as already the thermometer has fallen within ten or twelve degrees of zero. The partial thaw of Monday greatly delighted all who had predicted that the sleighing would only last a very few days, but by next morning the weather had tttrned cold again and a little more snow had fallen. The present winter has set in as suddenly as the last one broke up. ACCIDENT.â€"-On Tuesday last Mrs. Naatnan Eversou, of Verulam, was by some means thrown from a cutter and so badly hurt that Dr. Wilson, who was sent for to attend her, says that she will probably be laid up for some time. We do not know how the upset occurred ; but, in trying to jump, she fell upon the fender of the cutter, and was seri- Otisly, though it is hoped not danger- ouuly injured. Surrunxrs or Cantuâ€"On Tucs- day last Mr. Thomas Biek forwarded a carload of cattle from the Fenelon Falls 5 ation to Toronto, and on Wednesday Mr. Henry Austin and Mr. John Copp c'ich sent a carload, the latter also ship- ping 44 sheep and lambs and a dozen hogs. Mr. Copp says the cattle were the best lot he has purchased, two of the cows Weighing 1,200 lbs. each. He has bought fourteen earloads since May, and he expects to be able to ship every fortnight during the winter. THE CHRISTMAS Glennâ€"We have received a copy of the Christmas Globe, which certainly reflects great credit on all “implicated” in its production. The illustrations are exceedingly well execu- ted, and the short stories by native authors afford abundant proof that Canada is by no means destitute of literary talent of a high order. The Inruc coloured plate, " The Canadian Militia.” given with the Christmas Globe. must excite the admiration of all who see it, and a smaller picture, “ Friends,” would be a. capital thng for Santa Claus to pin to a little girl's stocking or slip under her pillow on Christmas Eve. lxst'uANt‘E.â€"For some years past tl'r Canada Life Assurance Company has not made any effort to secure busi- inss in Fenelon Falls. until last week, when Mr. J. A. lineknell, special agent of the company, spent a few days in the \‘illflut‘ and secured quite a large amount of business from some of our prominent citizens. The Canada Life is the old- est Canadian Company. and for many years past has stood at the head of the list of all companies doingIr business in Canada. For the future the insuringr public of this district will have an op portunity of doing business with this staunch old life company, as Messrs. :‘chnucall N; Brandon havo been ap- pointed agents at Fcnelou Falls. See card in this day's paper. S. S. Socr.\1..â€"â€"- The Presbyterian Sunday school social and entertainment in Dickson‘s hall last Friday evening was well attended. the receipts clear of all expenses amounting" to about $15. The programme was in: excellent one, old friends hardly knew bim....3Ir.& .‘Irs. LcFrew and baby, of the town- ship of Whitchnrch, county of York, arrived at the Falls yesterday forenoou. with the intention of remaining for a couple of weeks. Mrs. LeFrew is the eldest sister of Messrs. S. d: J. J. Nevi- son.... .‘Ir. Thos. Cullen returned home last Tuesday from Toronto, where he has been living during the past three I Capital 6; Assets as at the 30th of April, or four months. A Yot'rnrct. DENTIST.â€"On Tues- day last Dr. A. Wilson had occasion to practice dental surgery, and the opera- tion of extracting two or three aching teeth was attentively watched by his little boys, the elder ofwhom is about four years old and the other about eighteen months younger. patient had gone the doctor left they} surg‘ery. and soon afterwards his earsib ‘ __ were greeted by a bowl of anguish in a juvenile voice. Hurrying back to see what was the matter, he found little George with the forceps in his hand, tears in his eyes, and blood on his gums, and ascertained that Archieâ€"who had run away and hidden himselfâ€"had been trying to pull out one of his baby brother's teeth ! Next time the doctor amputates a leg he must be careful that the boys are not looking on. The demand in England for: the Christmas number of the Montreal STAR is something unheard ofâ€"a great compliment to Canadian enterprise. It is quite encouraging to hear English and Scotch people, wherever you 20 on the other side, saying: “ The Christmas STAR was the best of them all." The great American news companies are urging: the publishers to sell the Christ- mas STAR in the States, but there will not. be more than enough to fill the Canâ€" adian demand. There are four supple- ments with the Christmas STAR this year. 0-9 There was a sad Thanksgiving Day in the family of W. A. Rayburn at At- glen, Chester County, Pa. His three- months’ old daughter was found dead in bed that morning. The family out was on the child's mouth and nose. The coroner’s jury rendered a verdict that death was caused by sufi'ocatibn produc- ed by a cat. Millions of mocking birds are said to frequent the Yosemite Valley. A letter writer says their music is sometimes low and sweet, anon sad and plaintive, and then full, rich and triumphant, like a pman ofjoy and gladness. The effect upon the listncr becomes almost unsup- portable, so overpowering in sweetness is the volume of song. Fortunately, when the wind dies away, the thunder or the waterfall comes in to break the spell. “ King Solomon " was a Georgia ne- gro who made a sensation last summer as a Messiah. His name was Shadrach Walthatn, and with his followers wor- shiped in the wilderness. He was thrown into jail, and there died sudden- lyâ€"â€"it is now said, was murdered. It. is proveu that the old man was reading his Bible aloudâ€"too loud, the keeper said, and then gave him a fatal blow on the head with brass knuckles. There is no immediate danger of the United States becoming overcrowded. Joseph Nimtno. Jr., shows in Frank Leslie‘s paper that since independence was achieved the United States govern- ment has been the largest owner ofar- able land on the earth. The total area ofthe “ public domain," sold andiunsold, amounts to 1,849,002.597ncres and con- stitutes 7?. per cent. ofthe total area of the United States. including Alaska. About 700,000,000 acres of land have been sold and donated; about 1,150,000,- 000 acres remain unsold. As the area of Alaska is 3605305000 acres, the area unsold umlusive of that territory is about 780,000,000 acres. DI .~\ I? III El) .
