Sm,â€" t In my last letter I dealt as briefly as I well could with the French laugnage,i and before proceeding to the Separate I School question it might be as well for us i to see why these people with their lan- guage should be kept from advancing any farther into the province of Ontario. I shall quote from a lower province journal that voices the larger portion of the popu- lation of that province, and this one quota- tion should be sufficient to convince every loyal Canadian that it is time a move was made to prevent further encroachments. I now quote from La Verite of Oct. 12th, and which was afterwards copied into the Mail. It says it desires to proclaim the truth in I this matter. Confederation is “ not he last word of our national destiny, but merely the road to a better state of things,” " Why not frankly state," it asks of Mr. Lauricr, “ that which every patriotic roan desires at the bottom of his heart ? " What is aimed at is “ the more complete autono- my of tho French-Canadian nationality ” resultingr in “ the foundation of a French- Canadian and Catholic State, having for its mission to continue in America the glorious work of our ancestors. This is the end towards which the patriotic aspira- tions of the French-Canadian people have tended for two centuries and a half. This is what one of the leading Iv‘rench-Caua- diuu organs has said. Loyal and patriotic Ilritous, what do you think of the situation ? The task before the Minister of Education is a. diflicult one, to carry out the report of the Commissioners is his duty, the country is preparing to give its support to him or any other man who will do his duty in this respect. I'pou the separate school ques- tion much can be said; much more than space here will allow. As time rolls over, Itomau Catholics as well as Protestants are being convinced that the existing in- equality is injurious to the peace and wel- fare of the community. The separate schools of Ontario, und,I might add, of other parts also. are a failure from the edu- cational point of view. They tend to seg~ regate the Catholic from the Protestant population, to create a. community within a connnunily, nnd,us Mr. Armour remarked in his speech, the youth that attended the l separate school was a marked man, and was pointed out as such. He does not like il,ttnd hence prefers the national school for all. But why should the Catholics be privileged any more than the Methodists, Presbyterians or evangelical bodies ? The separate school question, instead of being equal rights, as some think, is a. gross in- justice, for, as a Kansas judge later said when ruling on this point between the whites and blacks,“ if there are to be sep- arate schools tor white and black, there should be separate schools for Catholics and Protestants, English and Irish, red headed and black headed, blends and bru- nette. Ilis lIouor resorted to the rcx‘hmtt’o ad abundant. Nevertheless, if there is to be one set of separate schools, why not another ? Why lloformers should keep shy on a movement of this kind is to me a mystery. leorge Brown, who was a Re- former or Liberal in the true sense of the term, advocated from l85l to 1839, in that interesting period of Canadian history,l precisely what Dr. Coven, Mr. Charlton and other Liberals are advocating today, namely. Equal Rights for all. Mr. Brown, in his address to the electors of IIaldimnnd, thus stated his position : “ I am opposed to any connection between Church and State, and desire to see all denominations placed on a footing of perfect. equality. I am op- posed to grants of public money for secta- rian purposes, and desire to sec the clergy reserve lands withdrawn from the object to which they are now applied, and devoted to the general purposes of the province or to education. I am in favour of national school education, free from sectarian teach- ing and available without charge to every child in the province." I know there are- mauy who are careful to remind us that the constitution stands in the way. lint constitutions are made to be amended. bluuy also believe it is irrevocable. To those that do, I point them back to the British Tory of 70 years ago, who veri'y believed that the constitution in Church and Slate as it then existed in England was final and unnlterable. See the change, to-duy. Why should Conservatives keep, when we lind a life-long 'l‘ory as Dalton. Mellurlhj' say at his Montreal meeting, “ I have told the truth regardless of party ties, and I mean to depend upon the future and to be true to the cause of equal rights, I for all. regardless ol party, or creed, or A Michigan man buried his wife, put up a headstone, repainted his house, married a second wife and dug five acres of potatoes within seventeen days. and yet he says he can't begin to hustle as his father used to.
