A very pleasant event occurred at our school examination on Friday. the 20th ult., namely, the presentation of a beautiful perfume casket and work-box to our worthy and highly esteemed teacher, Miss Mary Bowes, of Oakwood. The following address accompanied the presentation : V DEAR TEACHER, We, as a section, feel and regret your departure from us, and hope you may be blest in future for your faithfulness and impartial teach- ing during your two years here. We, in the name of section No. 4, wish to present you with these small tokens. a perfume case and work-box. as a me- morial of our respect. SIR,â€" Your useful journal I am afraid is being too much occupied by controversy on various topics to suit the tastes of your readers. A new contributor to your col- umns appeared iii last week‘s issue. so that your columns are evidently becoming sur- charged with the effusions of all and sundry who feel disposed to have their say. One Word brings on another, and Mr. Fraser‘s long epistle has tempted me to ask of you liberty to say a few words in reply to his expressed wish to know the truth. If truth is his object, I will give one version from Scott and Liddell’s definition of the weld baptise, which differs so widely from his as to lead me to suspect that he hits quoted from some party who has grOss- ly deceived him, aiid has thereby done him- Self morally serious injury. The first meaning of buptise is to dip re- peatedly ; second, to dip under. Then fol- low in order: to bathe ; to steep; to wet ; to be soaked in wine ; to be over head and cars iii debt; to overwhelm a boy by asking him questions; to pour upon; to drencll ; to dip a. vessel to draw water; to baptizeâ€" twelve meanings iii all. The above is so unlike what Mr. Fraser has said that it will throw discredit on anything else he may quate. Perhaps he may be able to explain how he was led astray.
