dl MODEdH BABTERH MAGIC. The Wonderful Tricks Which Are ignorin- ed by IIindoo finncisns. The last issue of the Journal of the An- thropological Society of Bombay contains a curious paper by Mr. Behatsek on twenty of the branches of Eastern magic, all of which are in vogue at the present time. I‘h: first cf these lathe “ Arcana of letters and of names, " by which letters and figures are combined into magic squares, incantations, 5:2. These derive their power iron: the “ arbitrary use of them made by the spirits gtverning the natural world, in such a way that the ninety-nine beautiful names of God, and other divine words, formed of letters containing the Arcana, which pass into ma. aerial substances, iotercede. ” The magician, of course is the sole interpreter of the uses and significances of the combinations. Al- chemy comes next, and is followed by as- trology, the most popular of all the Eastern occult sciences. It is practised on all occa~ alone, to discover thefts, to foretell the result cia journey. the future of an infant, 6:2. Another popular practice is soothsaying from the sacred books by opening one at random and placing the finger on a line. This is almost the only one of the sciences which costs nothing and which every one can prac'lse. The selection of days is a subordinate branch of astrology, and is employed to asâ€" certain what days are lucky or unlucky for the commencement of certain enterprises, the wearing of new clothes, and the like. Divination and the interpretation of dreams are common everywhere. Summoning and snbjngating demons is the most fearful of the magical sciences. There are two kinds â€"â€"one dangerous, and embracing unlawful magic, the other religious, and consisting mainly in confining demons in flame, so that they are compelled to obey the commands of the magician. Geomanoy is practised by 'means of dots made with a pencil and ar- ranged in complicated combinations so that they answer questions. The art of invisibility appears to be only known by name to Mr. Rehatsek, for he dose not describe it. J air is a science which is known only to one family ; it is defined as " the general science concerning the Tables of the Eternal Decree and of Predestination," and enables adapts to know all that has hap- pened, is happening or will happen in the most remote future. Palmistry, phyiaoteries, physioguomies and prayers explain them- selves ; phantasms is the name given to the art of producing images in the air by incanta- tions, aided usually by drugs and fumiga- ticns ; while predicting from the past is ex- ercised by studying the occult analogies be- tween the past and future. Sorcery is the term applied to all the phenomena produced by magicians, and popularly attributed to supernatural powers. It is divided into law- ful or divine and satanic or black magic, the latter owing its power to evil spirits. The last of the magical sciences is soothsaying from trembling, by which the future is known from the involuntary movements of the body, a particular star controlling each particular part of the human frame. â€"____._..â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"- Do not be Afraid to Ask. Many a young Christian-even if no longer actually young in yearsâ€"noods spiritual ad- vice occasionally, and is reluctant to ask for it, says the “ Congregationalist.” The minister is friendly, and undoubtedly would be glad to give the desired aid, but he is believed to be much engrossed with his spiritual duties, or in meeting the pressing wants of others. The older Church members are also very kind and cordial. But some of them are constituted so difi'erently by nature, or are situated in life so difl‘erently, that they hardly can be expected to enter into the case understandingly; and the others are as busy as the pastor, and are supposed .to be in the habit of referring everybody to him for such suggestions as are wanted in this case. So the inexper- ienced but anxious Christian hesitates, delays, and'fiually goes without the help he needs; and either he ets into trouble which -he might have beens own how to avoid, or else he escapes it by his own endeavors, but at the cost of very wearying and unnecess- ary anxiety and labor. If you are in his case, do not be afraid to ask for the help which you desire. Do not delay, but apply for it at once. Either the pastor or some other-Christian friend, whom you know to possess good sense and experience, will vs it to on gladly. The interview viii be enjoys is and it will be worth more than you expect of it. The help that on especially see i will be given you, if possi is, and also relations of a more or less confiden~ tial character and thoroughly deiiuhtful and useful nature will be established between you and the friend whom you accost. A mutual interest in each other‘s religious history and welfare will be created, which will continue and will be full of blessing. Larva Barometers- Ths mercury barometer, with a tube about three feet long. was devised by Torricelli about 1843. In Pascal's experiments directly afterward, various liquids were tried in tubes of different lengths and sizes, the chief of these harometers being mounted at Rotten in 1646, and having a tube 46 feet ions filled with a mixture of water and wine. Notwithstanding their delicacy, few of these large instruments have been made on account of the difficulty of construction. Among the more important are the water barometer of too London Royal Society, mounted by Prof. Daniell in 1830 t the glycerine barometer at Kew observatory, mounted in lSTO ; and the glyceriue baro- meter of Mr. 7Z>phar Mills. mounted in his house in New York in thG A barometer just placed in St. James' Tower, Paris, has a tube Ill feet long and ,‘ inch In diameter, and is filled ultn water covered with a layer oi oil to prevent evaporation. Au Exchsnse of Remarks- “ I wonder why the gas doesn't go out," he said significantly as he edged a little closer on the sofa. " It will as soon as you do," she respond ed with equal significance. And he didn’t wait for the house to fall on him. An Extended Experience. Writes s well~knowe chemist, permits me to say that Putnam's Painless Corn Extract- or never fails. A Wanderer's lament- Drearily moans the night wind Dismslly fails the rain, Wearily creeks the shutter Against the window-pane. Alone with saddened memories I sit in the dim firslight, And I would give the world to press My baby’s cheek to night. Her eyes they are the bluest, They’d shame the very sky ; Her checks are wind-blown roses Through which the June winds sigh ; Her hair is tangled sunbeamv, Her mouth too sweet by half. And I would give the world to-night To hear my baby’s laugh. Last night I dreamedI saw her ; Her face was radiant, fair, But when I tried to clasp her She vanished into air ; Her laugh was just as merry As from her lips it fall, But alas her golden ringlets Were crowned with asphodel. I know ’twas but a vision, A freak of fancy’s flight, My babe in peace reposes By its mother's side to-night. Bit drearily means the night-wind, Dismaliy falls the rain, I would give the world to kiss My baby's cheek again. EUGENE CLAY FERGUSON.
