Our picnic came offon Dominion day, and it was rather a dull affair for the children on account of the heavy rain; but the young men and women spent a very enjoyable time “ tripping the light fantastic toe " in Mr. T. Robson's barn. Mr. John Lamb raised his fine large new barn on Monday, June 30th, and it r=-flects much credit on the framer, M r. George Littleton. It was up early «enough in the evening to allow every young man to go for his best girl, and the foundation of the buildingr was well tried by the vigorous dancing, which was kept up until “ the wee sma’ hours ayunt the twal." Mr. A. Northey is making a great show stumping the roads here with his new machine manufactured by Mr. T. Robsou,of the Cameron lake foundry. Some farmers have commenced hay- ing in this section. The recent rains did a great deal of good, though they made the roads very muddy. They came just in time, and the crops, which .were beginning to sui- fer from the previous fortnight’s dry weather, are quite refreshed again. m Bury’s Green. Correspondence of the Gazette. The special correspondent of the War- dcr must have felt the effects at what he tasted when he wrote the article that appeared in the issue of the 20th ult. Let us try again, Mr. Special. The thought struck a little man who lives on a hill. and who is noted for his great desire for popularity, that something ought to be done to celebrate the con- servative victory; and he accordingly constituted himself captain, and took a friend who lives south on a bank as his lieutenant. Early on the morning of Wednesday, June 11th, Miss Bettyâ€"- as we will call herâ€"was put upon the tramp to give the invitations to the ex- pected faithful, the good old conserva- tives, for the evening show. Lo and behold ! there was what might properly be termed a rag of the party put in an appearance. The rank and file here will vote the ticket every time, but properly refuse to be led by that gallant pair. A fire was kindled by the road- side, torches were lit, and the necessary instruments of music were gathered from about the smiddy, such as old mould boards, and a thing that sounded very much like a tin whistle. The gal- lant officers then marched the crowd westward, and did not come into con- tact with the enemy until opposite the poor Grit’s gate, where a halt was made. It was then that evil thoughts arose, and threats to fire property were made; but the lieutenant consoled him- Sell for that time by exploding his mighty cannon, a glass bottle filled with powder. After a still farther march west there was another halt, and a tre- m-sndous howl went up. The poor Grits began to tremble, and the dumb ani- rnrrls all became greatly excited. Was it possible that some terrible calamity was about to befall them ? The retreat march was then made up the long lane to the mansion of,victory, which they critel'cd,~-and did eat and drink; and, if not belied by a party who was present, a fair percentage of them got into a condition that caused a snicker to run through the bible class on the followinw Sabbath evening, when one of the lead:: ers had occasion to condemn the drink- ingr of whisky to excess. This must be very flattering to the temperance people oi. East Victoria, but it is just what might have been expected. As soon as the Grits were satisfied that the two leaders had gone home, they thought they might sleep in safety, and so want to bed. ‘ ,k'r‘g As our correspondent took the trouble to write the above, which came yust too late for last Week’s issue, we insert it; but we must decline unythinu more relating to the election. which is now a thing of the past, and it is better to “let bygones be bygones” than to keep alive the feeling of antawonism ex- cited by the CODLCSI.â€"E(l. a "â€"< --â€"â€"o- .__._ Canada has applied for 50,000 cubic feet of space at the coming internation- al exhibition in Jamaica.
