Birchall’s Antecedents. A correspondent. writes to The Pall Mall Gazette :â€"-â€"It was in 1885 or 1556 that Birchall matriculated at Lincoln College, Oxford. His father was a dignitary of the Church, but Birchall was fond of giving out that he was a very important personage, connected with the Great Western Railway. and very wealthy. Birchall's tastes were neither elevated nor particularly refined. and his companions belonged to a set that the more reputable of the under- graduates fought shy of. Bircltall could be a very agreeable companion when he chose, and came to be looked upon as the leader of the set in which he moved. He played football occasionally. There. is no doubt his popularity depended to a great extent on the lavish way in which he threw money about, and this habit of his covered a multitude of sins that would not perhaps have been other- wise condoned, even by his chosen sat» ellites. He rapidly developed a charac- ter for eccentricity, and endeavored to maintain this reputation by oddities of conversation and the pcrpctration of innumerable practical jokes. For the use ofa club he established in Oxford hi's fertile brain devised a Weird and wonderful “ blazer ” with broad perpen- dicular stripes of most inharmonious shades of olive and pink. It was a favorite pastime of Birchall's to walk down the Corn Market and through St. Giles’ on a crowded Saturday night, tapping his stick loudly on the pavement in front of him, after the manner of a. blind man. His eyes would be half closed, and however great the crowd he would always go straight on, and gener- ally sueeecded in clearing a path for himself. He was morbidly anxious for notoriety, and to obtain this he not only got into hot water with his fellow-stir» dents but did not hesitate in cmbroiling himself with the authorities. lie was frequently in trouble, and more than once threatened with the expulsion that. finally overtook him. [Is was always clever with his pencil, and developed a great liking for the stage, though he was not much of an actor himself. At. the close of his last summer term he got together a scratch company of his com- panions, and going down to a well-known seaside town in Wales, gave a two nights' performance, aided by some ladies stay- ing there at the time. Also during the long vacation he became interested in a theatre in a small northern provin- VETERINARY. R.
