.,_,,,_. ‘ SHHLBUBFE. New York loyalists in Nova Seal". The history of the Loyalist settlements in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, if written in detail, would be full of interest; but there is haps more of pathos in the story of Shelburne than of any other. Early in the Revolution Ca tain Gideon White, of New York, visite Shelburne, then ‘Port Roseway, and advised his fellow-Loyalists to settle there. Before emigrating, they began'by forming themselves, asth of families, into a society, into which, upon a. recommendation as to good character of any of the original members, others might be ad mitted. Soon four hundred and seventy-one heads of families were associated, who were then divided into companies, each under control of a captain and two lieutenants, whose duty it was to keep order and distri- bute rations. Each company was provided with one transport for itself, two for its heavy baggage, andaschooner for its horses. The entire company was furnished with arms to the extent of forty pieces of cannon, ammunition and military stores being placed in charge of a commissary. So they set sail :for the Acadian province by the sea. The 14th of January, 1783, Amos Botsford and others, agents for the emigrazing Tories, wrote from Annapolis to their friends in New York of the beauty of Annapolis Basin, St. Mary’s Bay, and the St. John River, which they describe as “equal in magnitude to the Connecticut or Hudson.†Some of our peo le, they say, “ choose Con- way (Digby), ot crs give the preference to St. John,†while some they report as settling along the Annapolis River. But for many hundreds of families the project started in New York for building a ï¬ne Loyalist city at Port Roseway was sufï¬ciently alluring to prevent their going further. Having landed, they began to lay out intersectingI streets, to assign lots for .a. church and a school, and to erect substantisl'houses, in the mean time disposing of themselves in tents and rude bark cam s as best they might. The scheme of t iese New York people for founding a great city. in this remote part of Nova Scotia failed, but the heroism that made them, reared as they had been in luxurious New York and Long Island homes, able patiently to endure the hardships of this unaccustomed pioneer life, deserves nothin but respect. That they represented the st families in New York is clear when one ï¬nds among those who. petitioned Sir Guy Carleton for land, or who appear in Nova. Scotin records, representat- ives of the families of Anderson, Andrews, Auchmuty, Barclay, Barry, Barton, Baxter, Bayard, Beardsley, Bell, Betta, Bowden, Brower, Carpenter, Dabney, De Lancey, De Peyster, Ditmsrs, Fowler, Horsï¬eld, Inglis, Lawrence, Livingsï¬me, Merritt, Moore, Murrcy, Odell, Pell, Peters, Pine, Pryor. Bapalje, Remsen, Ritchie, Robinson, Sands, Seaman, Thorne, Van Buren, Van Buskirk, Van Cortlandt, Van Emburgh, Watson, Weeks, Wilkins, “'illctt, and Wilmot. For a time the Shelburne scheme looked promising. In July, 1783, Governor Parr came down from Halifax, and drank the King’s health to the new town and to the Loyalists, “ each toast being accompanied by three cheers from the inhabitants and a general discharge of cannon.†His Excel- lency then appointed several justices of the peace and ot er oflicers, and after adminis- tering to them the usual oaths, proceeded on board the Sophie, attended by the princ- pal magistrates, where an elegant dinner was given by Captain Mowat, after which many loyal toasts were drunk, accompanied by loud salutes fromvthe ship. The next evening a public ball was given by the town, which did not break up untll ï¬ve o'clock in the morning. Soon the authorities were entertaining such distinguished sets as Sir Charles Douglas, Bart. ; Sir ohn \Vent- worth, Surveyor-Genera! of the King’s woods ; and last, but not least, Prince William Henry, brother of the fourth George, later to be King himself. But, alas ! alas ! the best-laid schemes wil sometimes come to naught. In a few years the Shelburne people found that they had made a mistake in locating their city on a. barren sea-coast that had no agricultural will tell you that for all pulmonary difï¬cul- conntry near, and great numbers of them ties it stands unrivalled. moved to other places in the British prov- l inccs, orelso went back to the United States, and in Shelburne’s nmbitionsly planned streets and squares the g: ~:.~ was thickly growing.
