CHICAGO, Nov. 7.â€"An epidemic wt :i new and dreadfully intal diseasr ' w made its appearance near Kllkllin, i..d , a few days ago. On of the Chihll‘c- in the family of John Wiman was attacked with a peculiar disease that bullies all medical skill, and in 48 hours the child died. One after another the children, out of a family of four, contracted the disease and died. On Wednesday the mother, Mrs. Wimau, died. The father is left a raving maniac. The symptoms of the disease are almost too dreadful to describe. For the first few hours the patient is affected with mild fever, the tongue then becomes inflamed, and as sumes huge proportions. The organ then turns very black in color, decom- position sets in, and in paroxysms of the most intense sufferings death ensues. Physicians say the disease is known to them as it is described in medical books, and that its home is in Asia, where among the natives it is as fatal as chol~ era. They call it Asiatic bluch tongue, and confess their utter inability to com but its deadly work. Later news from the affected districts says seven new cases are reported, beginning with the same symptoms. A Hunter’s Awful Fate. STARVED TO DEATH IN A BEAR TRAP. Bancnnnmon, 0131., Nov. 9.â€"\lore than a month since an Englishman named David Allen, who resided in the h‘lagnetawan District, and spent consid- erable of his time hunting, started out to examine his traps, but failed to re- ‘turn. For ten days an uninterrupted search was kept up in the woods, it be- ing supposed that he had wandered away and become lost. The search was unproductive of results, however. The mystery surrounding.r his fate was acci- dentally unveiled on Friday by two hunters, who chanced to look in a cup.~o of bushes. Lying upon the ground, fucc downward, was the dead body of the hunter, and the condition of the bully and the ground showed that he had met a horrible death from starvation. Both of his hands were securely fastened in a bear trap. He had evidently been in the act of setting the trap, when by some means the trap closed upon his wrists with a vice-like grip. Unable to release himself and with no hope of making his voice heard in that vast wilderness, he suffered the most excruci- ating mental tortures until starvation and exposure combined ended his exist- ence. His wrists were frightfully lacer- ated where an attempt had been made to wrench his hands free. -. A Golden igar Box. LONDON, Nov. 9.-â€"â€"To-day is the nl‘. tieth anniversary of the birth of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. The occasion is being celebrated quietly at Sandringham. A large number of congratulatory letters and tch'gmum have been received. The Prince of Wales, through his patronage of various London theatres, has done much to make successful numerous plays produced at these establishments, and the manure-rs and actors were desirous of showing in some way their appreciation. Some time ago a movement was started among the dramatic profession looking to the formation ofa fund to purchase a pres- ent to be given to the Prince today. The subscriptions to the fund pout-rd in rapidly, and those having the niltir in hand decided upon a gold cigar box as a suitable token of their regard. To- day Sir Augustus Harris, John Hare, Mr. Bancroft, Beerhohm, Tree and D'- Oyly Cartc, representing the theatrical profession, proceeded from London to Sandringham. The present is a superb specimen of the goldsmith’s art. It weighs a hundred canoes and the value of the metal alone is Very great. The top of the box is surmounted by three ostrich feathers forming the coat of urnm of the Prince of Wales, set with (lid- moods. Floods in Spain are doing :1 grqu deal of damage. It is estimated that crain is being shipped out of Manitoba and the Narm- west, per 0. P. R., at the lure of 100,. 000 bushels a day. Editor Fortune, who sued a New York hotelkoeper for ref thing: to give him accommodation on account nl' his color, been awarded 6325 damage» ' v ' AAAAAA_AAAA‘-A__4A---A-AA;.-A-1 A A c
