" NEW YORK, Dec. 26.â€"Prcliminary steps have been taken by W. R. Laid- lnw, a broker’s clerk, for $100,000 dam- agcc in asuit against Russell Sage for using him (Lnidlnw) asa shield to save himself when Norcross exploded the bomb in Sage’s office on December 4. The suit will be based upon the allega- tion that Sage deliberately held Laidlaw between himself‘and the menacing dyna- mitor, with the result that Sagc’s lilc was saved at the expense of' terrible injuries to Mr. Laidlaw. Mr. Laidlnw is still an inmate of' St. Vincent’s Hospital, and it will be weeks before he can have for home. In an interview with Mr. Laidlaw to-day he said: “No one who knows Mr. Sage can doubt that he delib- erately drew me in front of him. My- miud is perfectly clear on that point heâ€" cuuse, being unconsious of danger, I was not excited and remember distinctly - the occurrence before the explosion. .-.._....__... Indeed a Disgrace. A LONDON EVICTION A'l TENDED WI'I‘II MUCH REVOL'I‘ING CRUEL’I‘Y. LONDON. Dec. 26.â€"-A block of:qualid buildings in Lenthenlnnc, in the. ”olâ€" born district, was recently condemned, and the time given for the people inhabiting the block to leave their dwellings expired lust night. Some of. themhad already left, but 48 families, comprising 130 persons, lingered in the hopes thatthey would not bodispossesed. But as soon as the legal limit of time had expired, officers began the eviction ' of the tenants, and the furniture was thrown into the roadway. The tenants were warned not to return to the tena- ments, and the doors were locked. The- scene in the street was distressing. Women and children, scantily clad, stood about, crying piteously, their faces bluo andpiuched and their forms shivering. Some tradesmen in the vicinity took pity on the unfortunate: and furnished a quantity of‘ Coke. Fires were started in the street, and about the welcome piles of glowing coke the women and children crouched, thankful for even this small blessing. It was believed that the ten- ants might resist their eviction and a strong force of police was present, and prevented any disturbance. The evict- ed people were compelled to remain in the street all night. There is general indignation expressed that the tenants should have been eviced during such an. inclement season. â€"~--â€"â€"-â€"â€" c O- A Calamity at Gateshoad. TERRIBLE RESULTS FROM A CRY OF‘ FIRE. â€"â€" LONDON, Dec. 27.â€"-A theatre in Gatesheud near Durham, was last night the scene of' a fearful panic, in which, accordingr to the reports received here, at. least ten persons, including nine chil- dren, were killed outright and many were injured. The sight of' the slight blaze caused by in man in the audience dropping a lighted match on the saw- dustcovercd floor caused someone to start the cry of “ fire," and a terrible panic at Once ensued. There was lut- mediatly a wild rush for the do-rs, which, owing to the savage crush :ml‘ struggle, quickly became so locked that. only a few succeeded at once in getting: out. There was a specially violent, rush for the staircase leading from the gallery. The passage giving access to this stair- case become blocked alumst at once with persons who were striving their utmoat. to escape, while the staircase itself a .134 filled with a struggling mass of'hunnmity from the top leading all the way to the outlet. A check taker was killed in the midst of his heroic efforts to sure other lives. In trying to restrain the crowd in its mud behavior he was thrown to the IllOl‘ and crushed to Ilraztll beneath the feet. of the panic-stricken people. ~_....__- .. - .. ....... -_.. ..
