Lucas has been at the lick during the past day or two and left yesterday (February 7) for Australia, on the steamer Alameda. M r. Lucas is a Canadian evangelist of the Methodist faith, and is a tall, stout man, of priestly aspect and with about sixt years charged to his occount. He declin to be interviewed yesterday “for fear that such an indulgence would constitute a breach of the forth commandment. He is presumably the reverend gentleman who has recently created no little exciteâ€" ment in eastern cities by his rather sensa- ' tional revival methods. He is able to hold his own in any encounter with the arch enemy of mankind, and vigorously denounc- es the world, the flesh and the devil when- ever an op ortunity presents itself. .He has achieve success as a revivalist, but it is a not often that his exhortations produce such immediate results as use the case a short time ago in the city of Kingston, Ont~ arm. He is a thorough believer in the spiritual efficacy of the dress-reform movement, and culminated a series of exciting services with an outdoor meeting, at which his subject was the sin and folly of fashionable attire. , His eloquence was directed principally against the corset, which he condemned as a device of the devil. After threatening with : thezhorrors of hades all who persisted in vio- Hating the laws of physiology and angering ' the Creator by using this apparently neces- sary portion of the feminine toilet, he called upon all true believers and those who desirâ€" ed to repent to cast off their unholy corsets, worship God with the figures which he gave them and burn the wicked stays before the wearers become involved in a conflagration themselves. IThe address produced a sudden and unex- pected result. The ‘crowd had.been grow- ing more exc1ted|during the delivery of the harnngue, and at its conclusion many wo- men in their fervor tore off their corsets then and there. A highly realistic scene was enacted. Some enthusiasts started a bon- 1 fire and the converts cast their treasures in- . to the flames, and it was believed that there were as many souls penitent as corsetless. ~ 5 Mr. Lucas did not attempt to inaugurate an anti-corset crusade in this city. He may have considered the task hopeless, or perhaps he was impressed with the number of (leaotees to the dress-reform movement. ‘ At any rate he has concluded to exercise his persuasive eloquence upon the corseted of residents of the Antipodes.â€"[San FranCisco Call. _ "’ WHAT JOHN SAYS About the Smuggling oi Chinnmen Across ' Uncle Sam's Border. Sometimes, for reasons best known to themselves, Toronto Chinamen become an- xious to pay a visit to Uncle Sam’s terri- tory. \V’hen luck attends those who make the attempt to at across the line and they show up in Bu alo the papers of that city send up a howl and call upon the policy across the waterfront to pay a little strictee attention to business. Just now the Buffalo ,press is engaged in this periodical cry, be- , cause of the arrival in that city of a few Ce- lestials from no one knows where. A couple of prominent city Chinamen were spoken to on the subject of smuggling, and both said that their fellow-countrymen in Toronto were quite satisfied to remain in Canada. ‘ ‘Uf course this business is carried on right along," said one, “and occasionally there are people caught, but it is five months since any Toronto Chiuamen had that misfortune. Billy McDowell, of Buffalo, and a man named Kennedy, could tell you something about the business as regards Toronto.” The reporter asked his Celestial friend how the smu glers managed to get their con- traband oo§s across the line without de- tection. c did not receive a direct answer. The man interrogated smiled, and intimated that he could not tell of such things. “ Is there any possibility of the smuggl- ers getting across on the ice at Buffalo ‘2” asked the reporter. “ Have they found out '2 immediately asked the Chinnman. He was told that it was supposed the men must have been taken across the Niagara river on the ice. His manner indicated that he was sorry to hear the news. “ But ever since that man, a couple of months ago, got a party of Toronto China men to give him some money to take them across, and then fooled them, there have not been any parties leave the city that I know of,” concluded the citizen of the Flowery Kingdom. , 1’ _â€"__â€"‘â€"â€"â€"-â€"â€"- The Oarelessest of Creatures. He came home last night a bit tired from a busy day‘s work and his wife waited until he had got off his overcoat and sat down. “ Did you got that piece of silk I asked you to bring up to-night '3" she inquired, seeing that he had not laid it before her. “ Yes, dear, I left it out there in the hall." “ Did you get the pins 2” “ Yes, dear." “ And the ribbon ?" i " Yes.” - ” And Robbie’s shoes 2” “ Yes." In the meantime the cityward tendency of population in Eng- land and in America continues, with what results only the future can show. The in- creasing depopulation of the country, what- ever may be its course, and whatever the theories of economists, can not but be re- garded asa serious indication, whether in Instant Relief, Permanent England, Scotland, Ireland, "or Americaâ€"â€" the countries where the tendency to leave the country for the city seems to be the strongest. In Scotland the extension of the (1. er forest still goes on, notwithstand- ing the many attempts to check it by leg- islation. A Parliamentary return just issued presents some statistics on this sub- ject that ought to claim the thoughtful at- tention of Scotti-sh members of Parliament. The total area of deer forest and lands de- voted to sport in Scotland as shown in this return, amounts to 2,661,533 acres, “ a startling amount,” as the Pall Mall Gav zette observes, “when the total area of Scotland is taken into consideration.” The Gazette gives the following list of the pro- prietors of the most extensive forests : Acres . of the Lungs, Liver, Throat, or Stomach, lilting in Par-v0. Broad belts, coming well up under the arms, are yet popular. The Queen Pawnee! ller Jewels. Queen Isabella of Spain, pawned her jewels to raise money to fit out the expedie tion that discovered the new world. Her sacrifice was not greater than is made by many women of America, who deny them- selves many things in order to have money to buy Dr. Picrce’s Golden Medical Discov- cry for their sick husbands or children. This “Discovery ” is more important to them, than the one made in 1492. For all diseases the “ Discovery ” is a sovereign remedy. A trial convinces, its continued use cures. It purifies the blood, invigorates the liver and strengthens and builds up the whole sys- tem. Guaranteed to benefit or cure in every case, or money paid for it returned. The long coat-tail basque is again very fashionable. _ Not the Right Word. “ No,” said Bertha sadiy, “ ‘pain' doesn‘t express what I suffer at these timesâ€"it is simply ‘ anguish !’ I know I ought to con- sult a physician, but I dread it so I I can’t bring myself to it. Then, too, ‘ female diseases ’ always seemed so indelicate to me, I can’t bear to have any one know or speak of mine.” “ Yes, dear,” answered Edith, ‘ ‘ but don’t you know you can be cured without going to a physician? Send to any druggist for a bottle of Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription, and take it, and I warrant you’ll feel better in a very few days. ” The manufacturers warrant the medicine, too. They guarantee it to do exactly what it claims, viz: to cure leucorrhea, painful irregularities, excessive flowing, prolapsus, inflammation or ulceration of the uterus, and the innumerable other “ female weak- nesses. It so strengthens and builds up the uterine system, and nerves, that worn-out, run-down wives and mothers feel rejuvenat- ed after taking it, and they are saved the painful embarrassment and expense of a surgical examination and a tedious, tire- some treatment. Quite a royal company and certainly a royal domain for sport, being an average of over 87,000 acres for each of the nine pro- prietors. In the debate in the house of Commons on the motion to prevent further extension of deer forests in Scotland last session it was ailirmed that 300,000 acres had been merged in these deer forests since the inquiries of the Crofters’ Commission in 1883. This was denied by the Ministerial- ists, but the Parliamentary return cited shows that no less than 433,346 acres have been devoted to sport in Scotland in the eight years since 1883. In view of such statistics the query the Pall Gazette places at the head of its article on the Subject is extremely pertinent: “What will become of the state if the proprietor of a province imagines that his interest is in opposition to that of its inhabitants, and that it suits him to replace men withâ€"deer '2” MW Light and delicate fabrics, such as China crape, India and China silks, rots and laces and soft cashmeres, are popular for children s evening dresses.
