Everybody is talking of the, wonderful growth of the crops and ol'thc I abundant hall'ch that is now almost as- S‘lrcd ; but, if the rainy weather continue much longer, a good deal of harm will be done on low hca’vy land. The unus- ually abundant l‘ainiilll appears to have extended over a very wide area, and destructive floods and washouts have al- ~ ready occurred in different localities in the States and Western Canada. The Reptile Fund. To-day the Globe brings the pub- lication of its ï¬rst batch of reptile vouchers to a close. Two main charges were brought. against Sir Adolplit:â€"â€"â€"lirst, that he and his t'riends obtained a huge fund in 18.57 from Government con- tractors, subsidized railroads and others; secondly, that he and they distributed it for the purposes of corruption amongst the twenty odd coutitucncics of which they took charge at the general election that year. The ï¬rst of these counts we have not dealt with at all. It is a mat- ter which could not very well be handled at a " trial by newspaper,†for in order to bring it home to the accused it would be necessary to examine persons on oath and compel them to exhibit their lodgers and hank-books. On the other hand, the second count admitth of' ready proof through the production of the drafts and orders drawn upon the fund by Sir Adolphe, and this job we think we have accomplished in thorough fash- ion. Two hundred and thirty drafts, orders and receipts have been printed in facsimile, transcribed, summarised or referred to since the story of the ras- cnlity was commenced in these columns a month ago. These account for an outlay, principally at the instance oi Sir Adolphe and Sir Hector, of nearly $75,000. _A large number of letters have also been put in. The actual cx- pcuditurc, as shown by the ï¬nal list. given in facsimile elsewhere, was $112- 600. At the opening of the campaign the two Ministers with others ulotted a certain sum for each constituency. The ï¬rst estimate came to {$86,000, but as the fight progressed there was a cry for more. The contributions from the fund ranged From $1 50 to $23 50 for every vote cast for the Government candidates. Much depended on the nature of the contest and on the standing of the man engaged. The average was within a fraction of $5 per vote cast for the Gov~ crnmcut side. Bye and-bye, when it is deemed op Il~tl‘ltlllt‘., another batch of documents . will be printed, not bearing upon the! expenditure, for that bmnch of the case may now be considered closed, but re- l l‘errin; to other matters of great public inwr-__~sl.~â€"- Wurst?
