Thibnudau, nu err-member of the Canadian Parliament. who passed thro' the city on route to New Orlenns, in an interview said : “ Canada’s annexation to the United States is inevitable. The word Canada does not alone mean u certain portion of the North American continent: it means, in addition, a cer- tain portion of the North American people. Now, the only question is, shall Canada submit to annexation while people still exist, or shall she wait until all these peeple have moved over to the United States, and then submit to the empty formality of allowing her depopulated country to be annexed ! “ Every effort has been made to con- ocal the truth regarding the alarming character and size of the exodus to the United States from Canada, and from lower Quebec especially. The most violent abuse has been heaped upon those who have dared to point out the danger in this state of affairs. The priests have been telling.r the Government the truth, and a. few newspaper have hinted at it. “The mildest term of reproach for these honest people is that. they are unpatriotic. The priests have fought hard to stem the tide of immigration. ” Failing utterly, they have appealed to the Government. Their notion, while perhaps not disinterested, has been truly patriotic. We cannot much longer ignore the facts that they have presented, or dispute their evidence. “ We may sneer at or ignore the annexation of Canada, but all the while the Canadian people by whole trninlonds are, as individuals, annexing themselves to the United States. These emigrants are, almost without exception, farmers. They desert Canada because they are being taxed out of existence. The Mc- Kinley bill has limited our market and the farmers are not yet accustomed to the new order of things. The Goxcrn- ment gives no heed to this. It imagines that the country is better off without the discontented people who move to the United States. The people who lent/e will, it is true, stir up no rebelliOn, but the time will come when the Government would thank the Lord if enough people - had remained to form a rcspecta lo rebellion." A Nihilist Plot. Sr. Pernusnuno, Dec. 27.-â€"-Numerâ€" ous arrests continue to be made at Kietf of persons suspected ot'Nihilism. Nine more officers are among those imprison» ed either under suspicion or direct charges of connection with n couspirncy against the Czar. The Russian author. ities believe they have unearthed a wide- spread plot, in which a number, not only of the lower officials, but also those ofn higher rank, are involved, and S( vâ€" ernl officers having positions of trust and confidence near the person of the Czar, having been put under surveillance, al- though not under arrest, being given leave of absence from duty until the suspicions resting upon them are verified or disproved. The extent of the plot is not. yet known, and there seems no doubt this time of its genuine character, although it is not. certain that. the moâ€" tives of the plotters are Nihilist. .fi-.~ A Bad Wreck. ' DENVER, Dec. 27.â€"-â€"The Chicago ex- press on the Santa Fe road, which left here at. 11.30 last night, was derailed about two miles east of Helstend while running at a high rate of speed. The passenger coaches and Pullman sleepers were hurled down an embankment 50 feet high, and landed in a heap at the bottom. The overturned cars immediâ€" ately caught fire, and it was with the greatest difiioulty that the imprisoned passengers were rescued from an aw- ful death. It is said that two unknowu, boys, said to reside in Denver, were fit. tally injured. A number of passengers and several of the train crew are report- ed injured, but none were killed. A relief train with physicians and surgeons was sent from here, nod rendered a21- aisteuco and relief to the injured. Tho accident is attributed to spreading rails.- - Knuua, Okloboan and the west gen- erally experienced I genuine blizmrd on Sunday.
