Murdered Her Husband. A LIVERPOOL WOMAN WHOSE IIATRED WAS EQUALLED BY HER. MUSCLE. NEW YORK, March 18.-â€"A London cable says: A murder trial, believed to be unique in the criminal history of this country, terminated in the Liver. pool Assizes on Thursday. Margaret Walker, aged 53, had many peculiarities. but the one which brought her into trouble was her objection to her husband carrying on an illicit amour. Her duty. judged by the British standard. was to protest, and if remonstrance failed to sulfur in silence. Mrs. Walker, not be- ing made of submissive material, con- fined herself to the former course, and she protested with such vigor that she is now a widow and an occupant 01's It came about in this way: Her husband last summer imprudently renewed certain relations with a woman of whom his wife had long been jealous. On return- ing home M rs. Walker gave him a good threshing, and, as that. didn't convert him, she, in a masterly manner, hustled him upstairs, chained him to the bed- post in the topmost room of the house, and kept him there to the day of his death, which was November 16 last. During the four months of his captivity he was visited and thrashed every day by his strong-willed wife. There were several lodgers in the house, and they heard the man’s Cries every day, but; got used to them, and never dreamed of telling the police. Finally,on the morn- ing of November 16, Mrs. Walker fur- nished‘ the novel disciplinary course Of treatment V by battering in her erring husband’s head with a massive steel chain. The doctors said the man’s body was a mass of wounds and bruises. The murder, brutal and revolting as it was, would not have attracted much attention had the victim been some long suffering wife. What strikes the public imagination is that a woman should‘ dare to kill her husband in such :1 runs- culine fashion, and that it is possible for a human being in the second city of the empire to be kept a prisoner for four months and slowly done to death. Mrs. Walker will probably be hanged. The judge in sentencing the woman warned her not to hope for mercy. .O Crafty Scheme 0 French Burglar. A locksmith who is called upon to pick a street door lock should take some means of ascertaining whether the per. son who employs him is really the occu- pier of the place to which he gains ac- cess. By neglecting this obvious pre- caution a locksmith carrying on busi- ness in the Boulevard Rochcchouart, in Paris, has got himself into serious trou- ble. A gentlemanly looking man came to him and said: “ I live at 157 Rue du Faubourg Poissonniere, on the sixth floor, and unfortunately I have lost my key. Please come and take off the lock and make a fresh key for me.” The un- wary tradesmen did as he was hidden and took away the lock, promising to return with the key the following morn- ing. When he did return he was as- tonished at. his reception. A gentleman he had never seen before rushed at him, seized him by the throat and called him “thief” and “burglar.” As soon as ed, from 10 o’clock a. to. till 10 p. m. Books- he could explain he‘did so, but he was exchanged on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 12 n.m. till 3 p. m. and in the evening from 7 to 9. Reading room in connection. dragged OH to the office of the nearest commissary of police. The place had been stripped of all its valuables by the man Who ordered the key. A!) action TER. The maid was in the garden Hanging out the clothes, And there came a blackbird And bit od‘her nose. This little example of domestic savsg~ cry has been sung in every nursery of every generation, but it has been reserv- ed for these days of reparation to see that the maid had her revenge. Thus it happens that a wonderful operation recently performed has historic as well as scientific interest. A housemaid had her nose knocked 03' by a hotel lift, and that organ has been satisfactorily replac- cd by the surgical aflixmcnt of the breast- bone of a blackbird, over which the natural skin was deftly drawn. Thus is an historical outrage avengedâ€"The Gentlcwoman. The German ltcichstag has passed the German-Russian commercial treaty. . v. Ami-NEE, A if? ...'.<, A_...M.J. .Zr... . D.,. “.4 c.‘..q 4-1
