ECIIANICS’ INSTITUTEâ€"1’. KELLY, A Mr. Gladstone’s Health. THE GRAND OLD MAN SAID TO BE ML‘L‘ll ENFEEBLED. NEW YORK, May 6.â€"â€"Tbe 'l‘iincs‘ London cable says: Mr. Gladstonc‘s briel‘ visit to London to make a speech colonizing the memory of his physician has been generally treated by the press. He spoke seated in a chair, a thing which London never saw him do before, and though his voice was heard all over the hall. the old light seemed gone out of his face. It was pallid and almost expressionless. He was approached with a suagestion to find time to include a short visit to the House of Commons, but declined almost testily. Reports are current of' his having declared never to open his mouth on a political subject again. The Sun’s London correspondent says: “Those who feared that his retirement from public life would bring upon Mr. Gladstone just those evils which he designed to avoid are begin- ning to find their judgment justified. The Grand Old Man has need many years in the past three months. The pietnre he made at the Dr. Andrew Clark memorial meeting on Thursday was a pitiful one. He was a fertile. bent octoaenarian, who leaned upon a stout stick even when addressingtho audience from his chair. His words were brave, polished, well chosen and appropriate. Not a shadow has yet crossed his shining intellect, but both flesh and spirit are breaking. Ila is not ill. No specific malady is under- mining his marvellous vitality, but a great change, which his grieving friends cannot fail to recognize, is making rapid progress.” .o,oâ€"â€"â€"â€"â€"-â€"â€" Alarm About India. THE LONDON SPECTATOR SPEAKS OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SERIOUS TROUBLE. LONDON, May 5.â€"â€"'I‘he Spectator to- day publishes an alarmist article in regard to India and the' possibility of " serious trouble in that country. The Spectator refers to the despatch' from Calcutta published in the times on April 17, announcing: that much excite- ment prevails in North Behar, owing to the fact that all the mango trees in several districts had been found smeared with a mixture of mud and hairs of some animal. The oiIicials were per- plexed. some considering that the smear- ing of the trees was a secret Sl.‘,ll con- nected with the cow prottction moveâ€" ment, and this and other movements going on in North .Behar disturbed and puzzled the Government oflicials. In its reference to The Times dcspatch, The Spectator recalls that next Thursâ€" day is the anniversary of the Indian mutiny, and that this anniversary has been preceded by a mysterious distribu- tion of cakes throughout Behar and the north-west. According to The Spectator there is something stirring among the Ncpunlesc priests, and it is feared that it portendn another serious rising in India. The rising. if it takes place, according to The Spectator. will be due to the dissatisfaction which exists on account of the rulings oi" the opium commission, increased taxes, the cow question and other matters which have caused deep mutterings among the pop- ulace.
