Verulatn MAPLE LEAF TRUE BLUE LODGE No. 4‘2. Hopeful Signs. The latest bulletin issued by the GI:- tario Bureau of Industries shows that the yield of full wheat per acre is greater by over two bushels this year than it was last, and that in spring there is an improvement to the extent of over four bushels. But, although the yield pt'l‘ acre is so much greater for '94 than it was. in '93, the aggregate for the whole Province shows a falling Off to the extent. of half a million bushels in spring and threcquarters of a million in fall wheat. This is one feature of the case as regards the farmers. Another is found in the fact that the product of cheese is in» creasing by over 20,000,000 lbs. a year. the number of creameries is multiplying at an equally satisfactory rate and the amount of fruit exported from the Prov- ince was greater by one and a quarter million dollars in ’93 than it was in '92. These are all most hopeful signs. They show that the cultivation of non-paying wheat is being abandoned for the pro- duction of commodities in which there is proï¬t.-â€" Toronto News. 0.- After Canadian Pine. « A LUMBER MERCHANT 0F VENEZUELA AT~0TTAWA TO SECURE OUR TIMBER. OTTAWA, Sept. 10.â€"Joban Renter, a Spanish lumber merchant of Venez~ uela, is at. the Russell house. He is in Ottawa for the purpose of establishing a trade in Canadian pine logs between here and Venezuela. Mr. Renter says that New York has been his market tor logs for many years, but as a result of his trip to Canada, he has discovered that he can do much better by shipping from Montreal or Quebec, and at the same time get a better class of logs. His contract with the New York ï¬rm expires in December. After that date he will make Ottawa his purchasing point for Canadian pine. His yearly shipment. will be 1,500,000 feet, or three or four vessel loads each year, each VGP- sel carrying between 300,000 and 400,â€" 000 feet of logs. Montreal or Quebec will be the shipping ports. Before coming to Ottawa. Mr. Renter visited the Mieh~ igan lumber district, but he thinks the Michigan pine is not half as good in quality as that. floated down the Ottawa. Mr. Router states that. Canadian pine is very much in demand in Venezuela, and is now being more used for building purposes than any other timber imported into South America. ï¬v-‘_-- Shot at French River. A PROVINCIAL DETECTIVE KILLS A FRENCIIMAN IN A BARROOM DISTURB- ANCEâ€"AN INQUEST ORDERED. PARRY SOUND, Sept. 10.â€"â€"Purticulars were received here today of a shooting affair at French River, in which Wm. Pereault, a Frenchman front Peuctang, lost his life. A few months ago some of the I’oro- ault brothers, who live at French River, were arrested by Provincial Detective Duncan McRae and fined. On account of this they have since borne the detec- tive a grudge, and on Friday evening last the four Pcreault brothers, with some other supporters, went into French River, it is said, with the intention of picking a quarrel with )Icltuc. They ï¬rst. went to Phillip’s Hotel, where a couple of them began quarrelling, and the ofï¬cer ordered them away. They then proceeded to Charlebois‘ Hotel. where there was trouble, and the detective was sent for. Moltae, alter swearing in three spo. cial constables, proceeded there. He arrested one of the gang, and had him by the throat with his left hand, when all the others attacked him, and Wm. Pereault grasped him by the throat, when Mcliae, with the intention of frightening them, drew his revolver with his right hand. William Pereuult was hammering him on the head, and aimed a blow at the revolver. when .‘lcltae. by the involuntary clutching of the weapon, discharged it, striking I’ercault over the left eye, killing him instantly. The other brothers then ran away with the alleged intention of finding a crowd of supporters to lynch the ofï¬cer, but hearing of this, the respectable people cl French River were determined to protect him, and armed themselves, 1 but the Frenchmen did not return. It is the general opinion of those present that, even if the ofï¬cer had shot inten- tionally. it was perfectly justiï¬able. Word was sent to Parry Sound for Coroner Capt. MacFarlaue, but. as he was army from home. an inquest cannot be held till his return. m v
