FRENCH LABORERS FIGHT. \VITH ITAL- IANSâ€"TEN DEAD MANY WOUNDED. PAnIs, Aug. 18.â€"Frcnch and Italian workmen fought in Argues-Mortcs, De- partment of Gard, yesterday. The fight began in the street at noon'and was car- ried on intermittently for , nearly two hours. The police made repeated ef- forts to restrain the men, but could not- rcstore peace. Ten men were killed and 26 wounded severely. A disturb- ance was threatened again in the even- ing, but was prevented by the police. PARIS, Aug. 18.â€"Latcr despatches from Argues-Mortes says that troops and police were taken from Nimes to Argues-Mortes last:- night to restore order. After the fight the French work- ingmen, who had beaten the Italians, started a man hunt; for the avowed pur- pose of exterminating the foreign work- iugmen. They attacked with knives and clubs every Italian that they caught. The Italians fled from the town, and most of those who had been in the fight took possession of farm buildings and barricaded the doors. The troops res- eued them in the evening and escorted them to the railway station, where. most. of the men took a train for Marsailles. The number wounded is known to be above forty. Ten dead bodies have been found and others probably will be picked up in the fields. All the killed and most of the wounded were Italians. 0-0 A Locust Year. The American Department of Agri- culture has sent out circulars making in- quiries over a wide extent of territory regarding the “ seventeen-year locusts,” which have made an appearance in eight States of the Union. The object. of the department is to ascertain accurately the limits of the areas occupied by the insects. There are twenty-two known broods of them, and they turn up in different years in various parts of the country. Though to some extent the infested territories overlap, each brood comes out of the ground only once in seventeen years. Strictly ‘speakipg, the insects are not locusts, but- cicadas. Some years ago it was sought to intro- duce these insects as an article of diet; but. the experiments in that direction did not promise success. Clearing the land has done much to diminish the number of these creatures; but their most destructive foe is the Englishspar- row, which drops nary other kind of food and feeds on them exclusively when it has the opportunityâ€"Scientific Am- criwn.‘ Ontario Game Law. Lady Tryon has refused to accept the pension of £600 allowed to widows of dead admirals. Her refusal is based on the ground that the court martial found her husband responsible for the disaster in which he lost his life. Her Ladyship’s action is just what might have been 0 xpccted ' from a. woman of spirit, but is none the less very much to her credit. , Nicholas Gross, a farmer residing near Wapakonetka, Ohio, brought a strange bird to town the other day. The bird was caught in a steel trap. and is the second of its species captured in this country. Its oddity is remain-lo able. The head is the exact shape of a heart, and covered with feathers so fine that they resemble hair; its face is like that of a monkey; the feet have two toes in front and two behind, caclt of which is supplied with a sharp claw; its color is a beautiful brown ; its cry is like that of a scored pig. . up..."t:o.c.,?arimâ€"Tsawsmam?7 ‘ 133:7“ ”‘ v '-
