The business of the country has developed until it re- quires thc great machinery in use to do it. No law can be passed that will make men compete and ï¬ght against each other who have learned that they can make more by agreeing on methods of business. You cannot by law make a man sell his goods at other than a price he shall feel disposed to, unless you take his business away from him. He can refuse to sell goods at all, if he desires. There is only one thing to doâ€"and ou- ly one thing will be doneâ€"and that is, that the property of the great trusts will be taken by the public and owned and operated for the beneï¬t of the pub lic. It will be forced as a matter of self-preservation. It is either that or the owners will continue to skin the people as they have in the past. And in the case where one ï¬rm has a mo- nopoly of some industryâ€"how could any law make them compete? With whom would they compete? Public ownership of ALL industries is the rem- edy, and it will have to be applied soon- er or later, whether you or I believe it or not. It is the inevitable. I asked a. Catholic Father I met on the train last week what would be the end of all this monopoly, trust and combining? He said he had been reading on the matter, and that there was only one thing that it could end iuâ€"and that was Socialism, though he did not agree wholly with the programme of the So- cialists. Vote for a system, believe in it. fight for itâ€"-and then kill one’s self to get away from itl The modern business man is a lulu! He never thinksâ€"-he just thinks he thinks. He knows less of the system he lives under, less of po- litical questions, less of the phenomena about him, than the average laboring man who belongs to a union. The other day I met a business man from Kansas City, and We were discussing the growth and meaning of the trusts and monopo- lies, and he said that he had never had any insight into the subject until rc- ccntly, when he engaged one of his workmen in conversation, and he had opened his eyes to what all this ferment and crushing meant. He said he \vas no match for the employee whom he would have said, had he been asked. was an ignorant, stupid specimen of the. genus homo. When Cardinal Manning said that it was not a crime to steal something to eat, if one were hungry, did the great man know what hunger means? It he did, he could have made no other de- cision. To the hungry man or woman there is nothing sacred, nor should there be. Talk of the rights of propeiu ty when a human being is expiring from hunger. It is rubbish, and no one who has ever felt those gnawing pangs will for one moment condemn the one who steals to satisfy the natural desire for food. And he who has made even a casual investigation of industrial econo- my, knows that there never would have been a. thief if no one had ever looked from man that which he needed to sud- taiu his life. It was he who locked from his follows the necessaries of life that taught men to steal. And those who restore to mankind the means of sustaining life will teach men how to be honest.
