PETTY, Objections to Socialism. â€"â€" “ Human nature is too selï¬sh for Socialism.†This is an old and much dilapidated objection which, put brirï¬y, amounts to the clam that Socialism is impossi- ble while human nature remains un- changed. The argument is that self-interest is opposed to Socialism. Is it? Why? If it be to the interâ€" est of the vast majority of the people to establish Socialism. as it most undoubt- edly is, how can the alleged fact that self-interest is the strongest of human motives be held to constitute an argu- ment against Socialism? They sayâ€"â€" the non-Socialistsâ€"that human nature is not good enough for Socialismâ€"that all men are selï¬sh and greedy. But, supposing that were true, is it any reason why America should not be- long to the Americans ? ' Say that we are all as greedy as pie“. Is that any reason why the great hct'l of pigs should leave the trough to a few‘ fat pigs who have already over-eaten themselves? If we are all for self, is that any rea- son why we should gnaw bones while a few of our number enjoy the feast? If we are all on the grab. why should we stand empty-handed and lets few grabbers take the land and the best of what the land yields? The heart of man is wicked. Very well; but what has that to do with the case ? Because we are none of us virâ€" tuous, shall a few sinners take all the cake and cream ? If we are such greedy hogs. it i strange that We allow ourselves to b robbed of our share. ‘ Perhaps the people of Liverpool are all greedy. But why should Lord Salis- bury own nearly half the city. while the hundreds of thousands of Workers do not own a brick nor a that of land, and even have to pay rent for a grave ? Mankind. let us say, are all rogues, every one a bigger rascal than the oth- er; but that is no reason why they should pay for bad gas, if they can make good gas themselves at a less cost. Human nature' is vile. Be it so. But that does not prevent the city of Glanâ€" gow From managing its tramways better than they were managed by the private company. There is no such thing as perfection in this world. Just so; the bee has a sting and the rose a- thorn; but is that a reason why a laboring man should not have beef with his mustard? ' ' We all want as much as we can get. Then let us all get as much as we can. It men really are selï¬sh and greedy. that is a strong reason why they should turn Socialists and insist upon having every penny they earn. What? We are all selï¬sh and stern. dyl Then let us not as selï¬sh and greedy men would act. Let us not all we can for ourselves. Let us rcjmt the state of things which gives us the work and others the wealth. Let us demand Socialism and see that we get. it. ROBERT BLA'rcnronn. London, England. I-’ Homes Under Socialism. When Socialists are elected to control public aï¬hirs they will build citios up- on scicntiï¬c principles. in which the houses. though dithering in size and de- sign. will be equally good and beautiful. Each house will be supplied with every scientiï¬c device for sanitation and con- vcniencc. It will be the crowning glory of the architects and their corps of as- sistants to see which city can be made the most beautiful. As the houm is the world of the wives and mothers. this will interest them. Etch ltoua: will be supplied with heat. light. power, hot and cold water and other conw-nicnces t'rom central stations. This will be far cheaper than building many individual plants.
