I was saddened to hear of a gold andé useful Woman out West whose lite was lost A just because the physician was too far off, She had gone I writes a correspondent. there a few years ago as a teacher and afterwards married, and at her death al family of poor little children were left to, mourn. A cousin of mine te‘ls how she had to ofï¬ciate in place of a doctor in that part of the country. Adaime laughs i after the danger was past and said she just used her common sense and called to mind all that her mother and grandmother had told her. In these days of oil and gasoline smves water can be heated quickly, in an emergency, and what possibildies there are in hot water I In cases of wounds, bruises, sprains and inflammation the steaming tea kettle gives us assurance. For sore throat I I am an advocate of the cold compress, winch is simplicity itself. Soak a. cloth in cold water, wring so it will not drip and bind on. Over this pin a dry cloth, go to l bed with warm feet, and in the morning you will quote: “Richard is himself again." For tonsilitis I like to recall the frequent drinks of hot Water I have taken to my relief. For dyspepsia and stubborn bowels it is par excellence. The latter must be “ managed †by perseverance. Laxative food and that which contains much bulk and waste must be eaten. Slippery elm or bread elm is old~fashioned, but so helpful. Rubber hot water bags are anecesiity these days, but substitutes may be used. Children are often aillicted with styes and tender eyelids. Nothing is better than holding a dripping hot cloth on the affected parts ; cold water would shock and chill. To stop bleeding, very hot water applied to a raw cut will be found just the thing. I greatly favor hot teas, “granny doses," as a man calls them. They can’t injure as do some drugs, and are soothing and produce a sweat. One woman physician said a mis- take was often made by having them too strong. Their chief virtue lies in their being hot. I have been called a “water crank,†but no matter. Bathing must be adapted to constitutions. We had in our home for a few years, a minister who was sure that a cold bath before breakfast was essential to health. He was a pale, bloodless man, and what vitality and warmth his body had gained during the night be washed itaway. His health was poor. Each winter morning he walked down town to his breakfast. Suilice to say, his health failed, whether from his “hobby†or not I can not say. As a counter-irritant, nothing compares to mustard. Anybody can have it. The druggists sell prepared plasters which are handy to tuck into your grip for emergen- cies, for sometimes a person is far from a drug store. Pepper makes a good tooth- ache plaster, and it is likewise helpful for faco neuralgia. W hen .\laster Lambie had a dangerous siege of flux I noticed the doc- tor used a spice poultice with happy re- sults. \Vheu a patient has diarrhoea or sick stomach little doses of spice tea are helplul. Now we come to good lard as a remedy. Its uses are many. They tell me how freely it was used on my body when I had malignant scarlet fever, when a child of four. The whole body was often rubbed with lard and it seemed to dry in at once. I forgot to sound the praises of flaxsesd pouiticos, or those made of bread and milk. You all know their worth. [like corn meal poultices better than the former, for to me poultices of bread and milk or flax- sued or onions are so oilensive in smell. The oil rub for thin children is a. thing I earnestly recommend. We have a woman doctor in our family and I guess I caught her enthusiasm for this remedy. She says “use coooanut oil :"just why, I don’t know. I presume the work of a poultice on a boil is to “scatter†it or bring it to a “head†soon. New for burns. The neighbor across the hall burned her arm severely last week. She groaned and rapped on my door and said, l‘ oh, do give me a cure quickly.†I bounced out of bed and ran for the mucil- age bottle. An application of mucilage excluded the air from it soon. In the country we were Wont to use applebutter, but it is mussy. Flour paste is good to exclude the air. I “as in a home once where if anything happened the cry would be: “Send for Aunt Eliza right away.†She lived near by. The sight of her cap border gave them courage. O The Earaclie. Many of the current cures for est-ache advise the dropping of various substances into the ear. One of the best specialists of the day pronounces this “ usually an unadvisable procedure," and in the place of such remedies, prefers the application of warmth to the region of the ear either by dry heat in the form of heated fluinel, cotton wool, bags of hops, bran or meal, or by cloths wrong out of hot water, steam, or poultices of Ilaxssed or roasted onions. Cotton should not habitually be worm- wedged into the ear, for the reason that or the air passage is thus closed causing secretions of the ear to flow more slowly very 1 little. and thus causing an unnaturalanil disagreeable and perhaps injurious dryness. As, however. many Cases of acute aural trouble have resulted iroin bathing and ipecially from divinir and plunging in salt. water, is a wise precaution to plug :he ears with cotton at such times. ‘ '4! a“: '.s the truthful. startling “21:0: a hook abon' .\‘o-Tollac. the harmless. xr-‘nrsrd tobacco :ablt cure that braces up nlCOlinlll'd nerve» l eliminates the nicotine poluin. mam-s wool. also gain strength vigor and iiinnhoo‘l. From The Owen Sound Times. The inaer lions efï¬cacy of Dr. \l'illiams’ Pink Pills has again been demonstrated in this town. The '.l'.m-:s referred to the as'on‘shing cure of .\Ir. “'m. Bclrose, a well known citizen. This was followed a few weeks ago by the remarkable cure of Slrs. Monnell, of Peel street, whose life had been dcspaired of by herseliand family and friends. A few days ago The Times returter was passing along Division street, when it was noticed that a new barber shop had been open d by Mr. Dick Cousby,a member of a family who have lived in Owen Sound for nearly half a century. Knowing that .\Ir. Cousby had been seriously ailing when he came from England, a few months previous, and at that time had little hope of warmer "i; his heallh, The Times man dronpe'l in to have a chat. and before the canversation proceeded very far it was ovrdeut that there had been another miracle performed by the wonder-working Pink Pills. “Well, let us start at the besinning of my troubles,†said Mr. Cousby, when The Times began probing for particulars. “Twenty-one years ago I left school here and joineda minstrel company. Since that time I have had parts in 'nanyof the leading miustrel companies as comedian and dancer lo the spring of 1887 I thorighthould trya summer engagement and took a position With Hall dt Bingley’s Circus, then playing in the W'estern States. One morning during the rush to put up the big three-pole rat, I was giving the men a hand, when the centre pole slipped out and in falling struck me across the small of the back. While I felt more for a time, I did not pay much attention to it. After working a week I began to feel a pain similar to that of sciatic-rheumatism. For a year I ' radually grew worse and ï¬nally was laid up. This was at Milwaukee. After some time I went to St. Paul and underwent an electric treatment and thought I was cured. I then took an engagement with Low Johnston’s Minstrels and went as far west as Seattle. About three years ago I made an engagement with Bowen and ll‘arquharson to go on a tour through Europe in the great American Minstrels. Before sailing from New York I suffered from pains between the shoulders, but paid very little attention to it at the tilt 0, but when I reached Glasgow I was scarcely able to walk. I remained in this condition until we reached Manchester, where I obtained temporary relief from a doctor’s prescrip- tion. For two years the only relief I had was by takingthis medicine. In May of 1893 while at Birmingham I was taken very bad and gradually got worse all summer. An engagement was ofl'ered me as stage mana- ger for Onsley's Minstrels and 1 went out with them, but in three months’ time I was so bad that I had to quit. All this time I was consulting a physician who had been recommended as a specialist, but without any relief. Bydropathic baths and other similar treatments were resorted to with- out avail. Finally there was no help for i‘ and I went to Manchester, and on Dec. l'2ib, 1893, went into the Royal Hospital, where the physicians who diagnosed my ‘Iï¬e pronounced 'it transverse myelitis, or Manic spinal disease. After being in tht h s ital for ï¬ve months I grew worse, until my legs became paralyzed from the hipi alown. Dr. Newby, the house surgeon, showed me every attention and became quite friendly and regreifully informed mo that I would be an invalid all my life. For a change I was sent to Barnes Convalescent Hospital, Chesdle, baving to be carried from the hospital to the carriage and then on to the train. After a week there a patient told me. of a cure effected on himself by the use of Dr. \Villiams’ Pink Pills. Being ihoroughly discouraged, I asked for my discharge and I was sent back to Manches- ier, where I began taking Pink Pills. After 'he use of a few boxes I recovered the use I f my 16:5 sufï¬ciently to walk several blocks. I then concluded to start for Canada and join my friends here. I continued taking the Pills, constantly getting stronger. I have taken no other medicine since I began the use of the Pink Pills, and I have no doubt as to what cured me. I now feel as well as ever and I am able to take up the trade of harboring, at which I worked during the summer months. “’hen I remember that the doctors told me I would he helpless all my life, lcannot help looking upon my cure as a miracle." As Mr. Cousby told of the wonderful cure, his good-natured countenance fairly shone with gratitude. He is so well known here as a straight-forward respectable citizen that The Times need say nothing in his behalf. His plain, uizvsrnisbed statement would go for a fact with everyone who knows him.
