NEVISON’S BAZAAR. 2 ! l l I Row Trade is GuidhiliPI‘ The final act in the marine law com- edy, which opened with the useless shipment of wheat across the lakes, has just been completed. Space has been engaged in a vessel sailing from New York for 113,000 quarters of Manitoba wheat destined for the British market. This is the wheat which was bought. in Manitoba for shipment to Toronto. At Port Arthur no vessels of Canadian register could be found, and the deal- ers loaded it in American vessels wait- ing for ctrgoes. To save Canadian ship- ping from complete extinction by the protection policy a marine law prevents American Vessels from carrying our goods for us lrom one Canadian port to another. This law otten puts shippers to the expense of' a useless return trip across the lakes. It. imparts to shipping and carrying the nature of an obstacle race, and. in accordance with its man- dates, the wheat destined for Toronto was shipped to Buffalo. After comply. ing with American customs regulations the dealers proceeded to bring it back to its final destination, but were con- f'routed with another and more formid- able obstacle. The tariff imposed to make farmers believe they receive com- pcnsatiou {or protection would have to be paid. The wheat was now regarded as a foreign product. Even a voyage back to Port Arthur or Fort. William Could not. purge it of the sin of riding in an American vessel and bonding in an American custom house. Protectiouiste may have feared that the dough would be sour and the cakes would not rise it' the wheat returned to the Dominion without additional customs difficulties. The wheat could make a SLICCcssful escape through the republic to the British market, but it. would pay the dealers better to bring it to Toronto. For some time there were negotiations with the Canadian customs authorities, but; no saving clause could be found for the grain dealers. They have now given up the attempt to get the wheat; to its original destination, and have de- cided to ship it to Britain. The Cana- dian farmers Sold at low prices early in the seaSou. The Canadian dealers lost the advantages of the Canadian market, which would have been more profitable than the British. And the. Canadian consumers lost. the advantage of an additional supply of good wheat. Of course if Messrs. Foster and Wallace undertook to once more patch up their laws in that regard they would be more than likely to make matters worse.â€" Globe. â€"â€"â€"-â€"»â€"â€"o-1~â€"-â€"â€"â€" Murder Will Out. Philadelphia, April 26.â€"-Alf'onso F. Cutaicr,jr., a grocer at 4929 Lancaster avenue, has been arrested for the mur- der of his aunt, Johanna Logue, sixteen years ago. The woman was the wife of James Legue. one of the most noto- rious burglars in the United States. About. two years ago the skeleton of a woman was discovered beneath the floor of the kitchen of the house at 1,250 North lltlI-street. By a hand satchel and a knowledge. that Logue once lived in the house, the skeleton was identified as that of" his will; Johanna. Suspicion was immediately directed towards her husband, but the most untiriug efforts of the police utterly failed to discover his whereabouts. About, two months ago Loguc walked into Coroner Ashâ€" bridgc'fi house one evening, stating that. he had heard that he was accused of the murder of his wife, and that he had come to answer the charge. The old burglar protested his innocence of the crime, and told the coroner a story that helped to unravel the mystery. and led to the arrest of (Intaier. When arrest~ ed Cutaier at first protested his inno- cence, but finally. under close question- ing, acknowledged having caused the death of his aunt. ---_»_.___. . -. . _-__..-.__ The Newfoundland real fishing sea- son just ended has been one of the mos-Lt sucee~sthl on record.
