Hamilton, stationery and blanks, $10.05. Council adjourned to 27th inst. Powles’s Corners. (Correspondence of the Gazette.) On Tuesday evening Prof. A. B. Kent gave an entertainment of a start- ling and novel character, combining Science, music and songs. The Pro- fessor had a very fair audience, and was well received, the practical nature of his exhibition and the vast amount of information he gives being the best guarantee of his popularity. The agriculturists who voted against reciprocity at the last general election, trusting to the promises of the~ Tory orators that the British market and the N. P. would bring them far better prices, are getting the facts presented to their minds and their pockets just now with all the force of an object lesson. Sir John A. Macdonald prom- ised in 1878 that the N. 1’. would make the farmers and everybody else rich and prosperous. There were more failures in business in the last 17 years than in the same number of years previous to 1878. Tuesday's and Wednesday's mail did not arrive here until after six p. m., on account of the horse trot in Lindsay. Since the commencement of the evan- gelistic meetings at Fcnclon Falls in the Methodist church there has been a very good attendance from this appointment, which is a move in the right direction. Mr. John M. Marshall is laid up at present with a sore hand. PM ANNUAL SALE or PERIODICALS.â€" The annual sale of periodicals will be held in the reading room of the Public Library on Monday neat, Feb. 3rd, at 8 o’clock p. m. A full attendance of the members is requested. Terms, cash. S. A. Mauritiusâ€"The three days’ special meetings held in the S. A. bar. racks here on Saturday, Sunday and Monday last were well attended. Quite a large number partook of the good things provided at the banquet on Monday night. and all enjoyed them- selves. The ofï¬cers wish to return many thanks to the kind friends who ably. assisted. A Goon LECTURE.â€"-Wo hope that the next time Prof. Kent comes to Fcn- clon Falls he will have a bigger audi- ence than he had on Saturday evening, when there wore so few present that the proceeds hardly paid. expenses. The lecture was a good one, being both in- structive and entertaining; but there were other attractions in the village that night, and the Professor fared badly. We are glad to learn that he did much better at Powlcs’s Corner. Moan TRAGEDIES.â€"Two or three weeks ago we recorded the killing of nineteen of Mr. Thomas Roberta's fowls by a dog, and the animal that slaughtâ€" ered them, or one of similar murderous instincts, went on the rampage in an- other quarter of the mini during last Saturday night, when ï¬fteen of Mrs. lullon's fowls, ten of Mr. James Cul- lou’s and nine fowls and four ducks owned by .\l r. Davey from Bobcaygeon has bought the whole of the contents of the two stores run for some time past by the Fenclon Falls Syndicale, and is now busy with a staff of assistants taking stock. One of the stores was devoted entirely to dry goods, and the other to groceries, boots and shoes, crockery, etc., and on Monday (if not to-morrow) they will both be re- opened and a slaughter sale of the goods will commence. It is the intention of the Syndicate to devote their entire attention to milling and farming, and the best of the machinery in the North Star rollingr mill is to be moved into the big stone building near the falls and supplemented by as much new machin- ery as may be necessary, and the whole will be run by water power. The ï¬ne large building now in use is compara- tively new and in excellent condition. and will no doubt soon ï¬nd a purchaser, as there are several purposes for which it is very suitable. CHURCH Maurineâ€"The congrega- tion of St. Andrew's Church of Fenelon 'lt‘alls held their annual business meet- ing on Thursday evening of last week. The reports received from all the organ- izations of the church were highly sat- isfactory. The pastor reported the addition of 22 new members in the course of the year. The secretary of the Sunday school intimated that» there was a very marked increase in the attendance since the occupation of their new comfortable quarters. The Wom- an’s Foreign Missionary Society an- nounced through their competent secre- tary, Mrs. Dickson, that although the greater part of their energies was di- rooted to the home work, they con- tributed $100 to the foreign missionary work of the Church. The Ladies’ Auxiliary raised $500 for church fur- nishings. All the funds of thc congre- gation were reported to be in a healthy condition. Altogether the sum of $2,500 was raised in the congregation during the year. 81.550 of which amount went to the building fund. The pastor and congregation have great reasons for thankfulness, in view of what they have been privileged to do. They are to be heartily congratulated. The Sonierville section of the pastoral charge had their meeting on Wednes- day eucning, when satisfactory and en- couraging reports were received.‘ coo A new edition of the Bible has been printed which contains pictures of negro angels and was gotten out by a shrewd Yankee at a oust at $1.50 each, and he sells them to the southern Negroes for SS apiece on the instalment plan, de- manding $2 50 on delivery. An old lady, who for the last ï¬fteen years has been receiving outdoor paro- eial relief, has written to the authorities at Aberdeen stating that she will no longer require assistance. and thanking them for past favors. She is 71 years of age, and was married the other day. Sometimes it pays a man to keep his wife lully posted as to his business. Not long ago a Brixtmiian advertised in a local paper that he would like to try a secondhand lawn mower, giving the initials "X. Y." He received an answer which struck his favorably, and after corresponding some time through the nouspaper ofï¬ce, found out that his wife was trying to sell him their old mower. RI 9.12.121 ICD .
