It in the Trail Creek district, which is populated and worked almost entirely by miners and capitalists from the United States. It is seven miles north of the boundary line and seven miles west of the Co- lumbia river. It is reached by rail from Spokane to Northport, and thence by stage. running fourteen miles. Charles G. Griffith, of Helena, Mom, is familiar with this region. He is the ore buyer for the East Helena smelt- ing works, and has had occasion to watch the growth of the camp. Mr. Griffith says: “In some of the statements publishâ€" ed about the Trail Creek region there has been a great deal of exaggeration. I do not. believe in such a. method. It does not helpa district in the end, and really does no good. The plain facts will be sufficient to make a very good impression for the Trail Creek mines, and I do not think it necessary to go outside of them. . _ “These mines were discovered five years ago, but for a time nothing was done. THE REAL LIFE of the district dates from 1893. Then people began to talk about it, and the development began. Since that time the population has: lincreased to 3.500, and the excitement in the region has been great. . It takes 8. Ion time to de- velop a mining ion, an Trail Creek has made a remar able showing intwo years. _ “The mines are owned mostly by cap- italists from the United States. Afew Canadian companies have been formed during the last six‘months, but no English companies are 0 rating there. The food stigply for t e region will come from e United States, particu- larl ' from the valleys in Washington. “ t is probable that in a short time smelting works for the treatment of ore will be erected near Spokane. Moat of the ore now being shipped is band- led by the East Helena. works. . . "The district is the largest in Brit- ish Columbia. It is eight miles square, and within this space there are innumâ€" erable veins, large and small, with ore, so far as developed, that Will average as high as $45 a ton in gold. The total expense of handling the ore, even With the present cost of shipping, will amount to only about $15a ton, leavmg a good profit. “The two in the development of three large pro- ducing mines. the Le Roi, the \Var Eagle, and the J 051e, which produces 200 tons a. day. or a monthly value 'of $240,000. The War Eagle began ship- ping less than a. year ago, and Since then it has paid $182,000 in div1dends. The Le Roi, whenI left, was promismg a850,000 dividend before Christmas. In this mine the workings are down 450 feet, and the values have increased to AT LEAST TWICE the estimated average. . "The ore presentsa curious forma- tion. It is almost a mass of pyrites. In our mines in Montana we have found the pyrites which were taken out with the gold-bearing quartz general- ly very rich in gold. But there is no- thing anywhere else in the world that approaches the magnitude of this py- ritio deposit. . _ quantities, and the yield from a given space is very great in_ tonnage. The ore is a mixture of ca.lcipyri_te, iron py- ritc, and pyritite. The veins var in width. Dr. Calthr was born in England and received ' reparatory scholastic training at St. aul's School London. Entering Trinity College. In the middle of the ce'ntur he visited Syracuse and reâ€" ceived his irst impressions of the young city that nearly a score of years later he was to choose as his home and in which his labors have been so long and effective. The masterly gul it address- es of Dr. Calthrop have their fun- damentals drawn from the deepest re- search. His young men have been taught a muscular system of morality. In these and in many other ways has he endeared himself to his congregation, which is one of the most. highly cultur- ed and wealthy in the city. - Dr. Calthrop has a striking person- ality. To the eye he’ is a most ictur-i 98 us ’ . His head and face. amed m . uxuriant masses of silky, snowy white hair and beard, are of the type of Bryant and Longfellow. To all who apply, giving- us the name of the paper in which they saw this notice, will be given an ingenious puzzle, the solving of which may earn you $50.00. To test a. wall coating, take a small quantity of it, mix in equal quantity of boiling water, and ifit does not set when left in the dish over night, and finally form a stone-like cement without shrinking, it is a. kalsomine, and dependent upon glue to hold it to the wall, the feature so strongly objected to by sanitarians. This matter of looking to the sanitary nature of wall coatings seems to be con- i sidered of much importance of late. A supplement to the Michigan State Board of Health, condemns wall paper and kalsomines {or walls, and recommends Alabastine as being sanitary, pure, porous, permanent, economical and beautiful.
