The Kingston News of Saturday, April 11th, says : One of the most dis- astrous accidents that has happened in the township of Pittsburgh for many yearS'occurred last evening about 8 o’clock, by which one man will likely lose his life, and another is seriously injured. Mr. Alexander McCalium, who lives on a farm owned by himself and his brother Patrick, was in the act. of closing in the live stock for the even. ing. All was safely in but one bull and a cow. He had led the bull into a stall, six feet wide, and was about to fasten the rope on a hook, when for some unknown reason the animal hunted against him, knocking him down. It then, with a fearful thrust, gored him in the chest; one horn entered the left side and penetrated clean through the lung. With a forward move of the head the bull ripped open the chest from shoulder to shoulder. The unfor- tunate man lay there panting, while the animal jumped upon him and crushed in his ribs and bones. His brother Patrick, hearing the noise, rushed in. As quick as a flash the bull turned on him, thrust its horns in the right hip, ripped open his right side up to the ribs and knocked him to the floor. He jumped up and escaped by running in a stall in front of one of the cows. In the meantime Alexander crawled out of the door. The animal by this time had worked itself into a terrible fury, and snorted and raved as though nothing but the blood of its owners would pacify it; When the men escaped beyond its reach, it turned on one of the cows, and caught it underâ€" neath, between the fore and hind legs. It threw the cow over its head with remarkable ease, requiring very little exertion, so great was its strength. While it was dealing with the cow, Patrick dragged himself out of the stable, and both the injured men strug- gled into the house, which is about twenty-five yards from the barn. A hired man appeared on the scene after the brothers escaped. He carried a pitchfork, which frightened the bull somewhat, and he succeeded in fasten- ing it securely. Word of the frightful occurrence was immediately brought to the city, and Dr. Phelau, a great friend of the Mo- Callum family, in company with Dr. Bell, hastened down to attend the in- jured men. They found that Alex. was in such a condition that little hope of his recovery could be entertained. His left lung was pierced through, a deep gash made across his chest, several ribs broken, and, besides several other bones broken in the body, he is injured in the head. His was an appalling experience. Everything possible was done to help the suffering man. Patrick was not hurt so seriously. The gash in his right side is a deep one, and besides this he received other bodily injuries. He will recover. The doctors remained all night and until eight o’clock this morning. Toe cause of all the trouble stamped and reared all night, and this morning when the hired man went to the stable it snorted and roared with appalling fury. The hull is an immense brute, and weighs 1,600 pouuds. Its horns are about nine inches long, very sharp, and stick out almost perpendicularly to the forehead. It is possessed of tre- mendous strength, but how it got into its frenzied state is not known. o-o A Man and Team Blown to Atoms. VICTORIA, B. 0., April ll.-â€"-Iotensc excitement was caused throughout Nan- aimo district yesterday by a terrific explosion plainly heard and felt fora distance of thirty miles. The explosion took place near the works of the Hamil- ton Powder company, on Departure Bay road, a thousand pounds of nitroglycer- ine exploding while being conveyed in a wagon from the warehouse to the mill. Austin Stevenson, the teamster, and his wagon and team were blown t9 atoms, while trees were uprooted every- where withiu a radius of twohundrcd yards, the windows were shattered and frail buildings demolished as far as Nauaimo, ten miles away. As far as at present is known only Stevenson's life was lost. my The times publishes a despatoh from Singapore which says that Li Hung Chang has abandoned his proposed American tour; but that after the Cznr‘s coronation at Moscow. he will proceed to London to see Lord Salisbury.
