: (‘BLASS TO KEEP ROOMS COOL. ~'An Austrian inventor. Richard Szig. moody. is said to have made a new kind 0f Window-glass whose chief peculiar- ‘lty is that it prevents the passage of about nine-tenths of the heat of the sun's rays. It is well known that or- dinary window-glass allows nearly all of the heat derived from the sun to pass through. but on the other hand Intercepts nearly all heat coming from non-luminous sources. such as a stave. or the heated ground. This is the rea- son why heat accumulates under the glass roof of a hothouse. If covered with Szigmondy's glass It hothouse would become most decidedly a cold house. since the heat could not get in- to it. One advantage claimed for the new glass is that a house whose wm- dows were furnished with it would re- main delightfully cool in summer. But in winter, perhaps the situation would not be so agreeable. Indeed, the panes would have to be exchanged for .others of ordinary glass. since otherivise no sunâ€"heat could enter the house. TRAINS WITHOUT RAILS. Experiments which are described as iatisfactory have recently been made .n the suburbs of Paris with a train. drawn by a steam locomotive, running not on rails. but on an ordinary road. I‘he train used at present consists of only two cars one of which contains the locomotive machinery, together With seats for fourteen passengers. while the other has twenty-four seats. The en- ginc is of 16 horseâ€"power and the aver- age speed is about seven miles an 'hour. The train is able to turn in a circle only 28 feet in diameter. Another train has been constructed for the conveyance of freight. It is hoped by the inventors that trains of this kind will be extenâ€" uively employed in and near Cities. LUMBAGU SHRED.
