BEALL, WATCHMAKER, LINDSAY. .â€"_.â€"_â€"__â€"______.~.â€". The Ontario Department of Agriculâ€" ture has received from Mr. A. Lockling, its correspondent at Emo, Rainy River district, a box containing samples of the various products of that promising land. The box was shipped on Juno 3rd by freight, and contained, among other things, grain, spring wheat and potatoes, all produced last season. The potatoes had remained in the ground all winter and were perfectly sound. In fact they had started to sprout in tho. box. There were also some samples of fruit trees and fruit shrubs, which in- dicated that fruit of several varieties can be successfully grown in the Rainy River country. There was also a bunch of rhubarb grown out of' doors, and fit for use, since May 5th. This is a record quite equal to the garden production of the older settled parts of Ontario. Mr. Lockling also enclosed honey-- comb from the first hive introduced into that section, and a sample of wool from the first flock of sheep. These are owned by himself. Mr. Lockliug Says that last year his wheat was harvested with a self-binder, the first taken into the district. As further proof of the productiveness of that section, he inâ€" cluded in the collection some passion and other flowers in blossom, which had remained out of doors without any pro- tectiou other than that afforded by the snow. Several samples of the soil were also sent down; The sending of the box was in auâ€" swer to certain criticisms of a report made by Mr. Lookling to the Bureau of' Industries. in which he dealt with the wonderful agricultural possibilities SEASON DAY, MAY 17th, and will continue during the season. N He Can Stand His Title. .â€" It is not a matter of very great sur- prise that some men are criticizing the Canadian Premier for accepting the knighthood which was pressed upon him in this jubilee year. Two classes of people are out. with arguments, which date back almost to the middle ages, so useless and unconvincing are they. The high-minded Conservative journals, of course, complain of' Mr. Laurier’s inconsistency in accepting a title which he always looked on with some opposition. But, as the under- current ot these journals’ bright ideas is the conviction that. Sir Wilfrid Laur- ier, unlike the king, can do nothing but wrong, the opinions so earnestly ex- pressed must not be taken very seri- ously. But it must be admitted that some Liberals do not appreciate titles. and object to their leader being adorned bya title. But times have changed since it was part and parcel of the Lib- eral party to hate all things British, and to look on any recognition of merit and worth as anti-Liberal. In the old days it must be admitted that our connection with Great Britain was somewhat visionary, and many Canadians had an idea that the time was not far distant when Canada might be an independent democratic nation. But the greatest feature of this great jubilee is the fostering and encouraging That is the policy of To lend or at Bicknoller, Somersetshirc, is a year of the Imperial policy. greatest element now in the the Liberal party of Canada. some aid to this, Sir Wilfrid conformed to British customs, and. to strengthen the Imperial idea, he con- sented to bear a British title. further In the of the Rainy River district. A number of persons corresponded with him in regard to the matter, and some of them appeared doubtful of the accuracy of his report. To satisfy these doubters the box was sent down, and its contents can be seen at the I’nrlinmcntbuildings. -â€"â€"G'lobe. ._____.... Riddled with Hail. THE KANSAS CAPITAL PU'IB IN AN AlVFUL HOUR. Topeka, Kansas, June 25.-â€"’l‘he worst hailstorm known in tho historv of Kansas struck this city last night. Huilstones weighing 12 to 16 ounces stripped the trees of their foliauv, smashed window panes, including the finest plate glass store fronts, cut (IOWII telegraph and telephone wires, riddlml awnings and inflicted unprecedented damage "throughout the city. Dom were struck in the streets and instantlv killed, and horses were knocked to their knees. When the fury of the storm had passed, dead birds were f‘omul everywhere. Frequent and territiv lightning accompanied the storm. Topeka looks like a city that; hn~ withstood an artillery seigc. There are not a dozen buildings in the town that are not almost windowless auul Illlluv roofs wore caved in. The root‘s oi street-cars also were pierced. The dam- aL'e wrought can better be imaginul when it is known that the hailstoum ranged in size from that of a heu's egg to that of an ostrich, egg and that, 150 minutes after the storm, one Imilstone was picked up which measured fourteen inches in circumference. Surgeons are busy dressing the wounds of persons in jured in the storm. and reports of injun- ies continue to be received. Many were hurt in runaways. _._..__...--..._. _ _.
