Some interesting information on the bubonic plague, a case of which reached New York the other day, is given by Toronto’s ilierlical Health Ofï¬cer. Dr. Sheard. The informaâ€" tion is all the more interesting beâ€" cause Canadians are able to look at this fearful scourge dispassionately. The plague is a disease of the blood and lymph. The swolling of the lymphatic glands in the groin, -:om1nonly called bubocs, gives it its name. The germ has been reâ€"pro- duced in animals, and experiments in infection show that animals die more rapidly and that rats are par- ticularly susceptible to the disease. WHERE DANGER LlES. It may be communicated by the importation of goods from infected countries. It appeared in San Francisco in November, 1898, and “sporadic†cases, isolated ones with .no apparent connection with the preâ€" vious ones, still crop up. It made its appearance among the Chinese, and the large population of Celes- tiuls', tea merchants, etc, accounts for its continuance. The disease has many peculiariâ€" ties. The germ is largely influenced by temperature; very warm or very cold weather "to it, and a temperate climate favâ€" ors it. Thus 75 days’ (il'yillg' in America and 28 days’ drying in Germany were necessary to kill the germ, while eight days sufliccd in .ln~ dia. The germ may lie dormant for weeks and reâ€"appear under favorable' circumstances. The 'victims- may die after a very short illness or they may be ill for days or weeks and reâ€" cover. After death the temperature of the body, instead of decreasing. increases. I’utrefactlon of the most offensive kind rapidly sets in. The symptoms of the disease are headache, lassitudc, pains in the head, swellings in the groin. Vomâ€" iting and diarrhoea follow, the temâ€" perature becomes very high, and the sufferer staggers and acts generally as though intoxicated. Delirium “frequently occurs followed by a total collapse and death. NOT IN Til-ll?) All}. Dr. Sheard does not think the plague is communicated by the air. The germ may enter the body through a person eating or handling infected material. The vomiting, which is one of the victim’s afflicâ€" tions, may be a cause of infection. It is a. disease which can be readily checked, but the measures have to be stringent. Four or ï¬ve days is the period of incubation, so that. if ,o-ne person catches the disease diâ€" rectly from another, it will make its appearance within that period. The disease, however, crops up after much longer intervals. { That Ste plague‘is spread by in- wgkk. . ._... is equally destructive- conimission appointed to examine the evidence. it is significant, howâ€" ever, that they ordered the strictest measures of isolation and disinfec- tion. .in .1808 its presence could no longer be denied and 192 deaths ocâ€" curred. il’n 1899, two and a. half years after its first appearance, the severest: epidemic of all broke out. In aria-an, a Portuguese colony :30 miles from I-long' Kong, six cases of plague appeared in May, ~18th These were all the cases observed until nine montl‘s later it reâ€"appearerl, and by May, 18.05, the death rate was 30 per day. San l-‘rancisco, which is America’s. great danger point in this respect, has troubles of its .own in fighting the plague, although it has succeedâ€" ed in keeping it down. The Chiâ€" nese, among whom it appears, keep to themselves and do not readily ad- mit the health authorities. To a certain extent the press and a. secâ€" tion of the merchants of the city af- ford bitter opposition to the llealth Board. 1 __â€"â€"_â€"â€"?â€"â€"â€"â€"~-â€"â€"â€" It is estimated that the men of Great Britain spend $1,250,000 a- year on silk hats.
