We have them here now become rampant, it is because tho sani- ta'ryconditions are bad. What is done? Why, the boards of health compel__the people to clean up and disinfect, and the scourge disappears. Now, if a little sanitation will. after a disease has a. foothold, stop that disease. why shoold not, perfect sanita'ion prevent it from ever getting a start? And do you not- know that dis ease is the ‘opposite of ease, or-natural feelingâ€"that disease is abnormal or unnatural? Now, suppose we have the highest possible sanitary conditions; suppose that all homes and workshops are constructed with the prime aim of being the best possible for the health of the citizens who work therein-â€"d0 you not know that disease will disappear in proportion as they are in conformity with the natural laws un- der Which human beings should exist ?' And does it not follow that when tho people erect houses and shops for them- selves, when t-hey have the capital and skill of' the nation at their disposal t0- do such things. they will erect the best that their knowledge will enable, and that, under such conditions, disease will soon disappear? Do you not know that, if a. person lived under right. conditions from birth, he would never have con- sumption or any other unnatural tron- ble, if born of fairly healthy parents ?' Socialism will produce the best environ- ments for the human family that its highest knowledge enables it to do. In a few generations disease will disappear. At present disease is on the increase; The present season is impractical. Since I wrote the above, some one. has sent me a copy of the New York Herald, in which Dr. G. F. Shrady oi that city shows that the sanitation in- troduced into Cuba has for the first: time abolished yellow fever from that island; and says that, with proper san- itution, consumption and other diseases can be eradicated. Ho advocates the city erecting municipal tenement houses scientifically builtas a means to that end. says that it will cost less than the- diseases that are bred in the existing filthy tenements now cost.â€" Wayland. 0-’. They Dcn’t Care. -_-â€" A dispatch to the Chicago Daily News from Vienna, Austria. March 3Q, states that the Catholic society for lhe;_ promotion of Cntholicwschools in Aus- tria. at its annual session, announced that Austria should make war on Italy to vindicate the right of the lloly See. It is this same character of allege-l Christians in this country, in the pen-on of bishops thatfis fighting the Socialis- tic movement. The-y will use all their power lo‘help the old parties and the trusts maintain their power over the people 0i this anllOpOlyfldthlOl] nation. They do n’t care. They are well fed and well groomed, and they prefer to rule to have the people rule. What if millions are killed in war-they \Iill be only the working people. Think of "Christians" wanting people to kill each other for the lovo of Godl The temporal power of the popcâ€"â€"that is. a government of. by and for the clericais- --is what they want. Mrs. Valentino of Chicago has just built a $5,000 home lor her pet dogs. and installed a cook for them. That is the highest idi-al of the rich, who get tho wcath they possess from the poor. That is what great private wealth docs for its possessors. It ought to make the hlooll of nay citizen of a republic boil- but it seems to soothe them, and they vote the >an'ic old tickets for its contig- nancc, while their wines an'l children live in any old shack and wear any old shoddy. What. the rich possess is voted lhto their hands by the wot-king'class. When the working class hccome class l conscious, when they capture the powers of government by and through tho Soci- alisiic party, the Mrs.‘Valcntinc~a will either do useful work or starvo.--lbiii. --°0 Tho ethics 0f Socialism are identical withihc ethics of Christianity. l “Wi" ‘drv'v'a' Pr“. ~/ z'a .v $1‘ r; -~'..v" t’ afi¢¢~ryw , (HM~¢M*$ L.‘ ~ 1 errorwmsape“¢ww ..
