"1‘ KNEW HIS WAY ABOUT. WA remarkable monkey has just died in Paris at the age of twenty. It was formerly in a zoo in one of the French colonies, and showed an ardent desire for liberty. A savant, ito test its abilities, placed it on an islet, on the shore of which was a small boat roped to the mainland. The monkey quickly embarked, haulâ€" ed at the rope like a sailor, and was quickly across the water. The men- key also understood how to light candles, and wipe himself with a towel. ,y / BULL DOG v. W'ILD CAT. After having killed a dozen ter- riers a newly-captured wild cat was '[ntted against a British bull dog by two Cincinnati ~mcn. The animals fought for twenty minutes. The dog killed his rival, but was shockingly mauled. Professor Von Herkomer, the famâ€" ous painter, had such a struggle to gain a living in his early days that, had it not been for his inexhausti- ble stock of patience and selfâ€"confi- dence, he would probably have abandoned art entirely. He sold his first picture for two guineas, and later on earned for a short time a couple of pounds weekly for a wood out which he supplied to a comic paper. This modest salary coming to a stop, he was at his Wit’s end to know what to do. He applied to a troupe of minstrels for an engagement as zither player, but in vain, and then took to designing carpets. For some years he battled with poverty, achieving no success until he obtained employment on a weekly illustrated journal. HAMMOND’S OPINION. Expert Testimony on Wheelingâ€"- ' The Revival. Dr. Hammond, one or New York's most foremost physicians, and an active member of the New York Ath- letic Club, was recently interviewed by a representative of the New York press, and asked his opinion as to the merits of cycling‘ as exercise. The doctor stated very decidedly that he considered it absolutely the best possible, if taken with discretion. I-Ie of course excluded all persons with very weak hearts, or people of extremely delicate constitutions, but said that nearly every patient goâ€" ing through his hands rode a bicycle when convalescent, and that it was remarkable what progress they made towards health. In Canada there has been an un- precedented revival in wheeling, and it can be traced to no better cause than to the introduction of the Hy- gienic Cushion Frame. To use the words of the advertiser, “It is to wheeling what the ‘Pullman’ is to railroading," and these words put the argument in 'the proverbial nutâ€" shell. It allows the rider 'to hold a uniform position, while the wheels accommodate themselves to the roa'dbe'd. It has made bicycling an absolutely pleasant and healthy form of outing. “Massey-Harris,” “Cleveland,” "Bran‘tfor'd" and “Per- fect” bicycles have this cushion frame. " “ dreads?" .l. .
