WHEN SHE CAN’T TALK. ~ No Wonder Women Hate to Go to the Dentist’s. “Do you know why it is that a woman dreads so to have a tooth filled?” asked the dentist of the young man in the chair. The yonn-g man was of the opinion that it was because women are hu- man, and consequently decidedly op- posed to having their jaws and gums subjected to a treatment like unto the working of a compressed air drill in a stone quarry. “No,” said the man of the drills and forceps. "Women can stand pain much better than men. It is a fact, even in the extracting of troublesome teeth, the fortitude of the little, slender women is remarkable when one comes to consider the hideous groans that emanate from a, big man undergoing the same operation. It isn’t the fear of pain that keeps many‘a woman away from the chair when she really ought to be having her teeth attended to. "You see this rubber? Well, that rubber goes into the mouth of every person who comes in here to have a filling put in. You can see that it covers the mouth entirely; doesn’t leave the patient half a chance to talk. Well, there you have it; that’s the reason women don't like to go to the dentist. Yes, sir, it’s a fact. [ have lost some of my best customâ€" ers because of the necessity of ap- plying that rubber. "A woman comes in here to get a' 300th filled. If- shc is inexperienced in this line she will be surprised 'ilhen the rubber is produced. As'soon as it is placed in her mouth she tries to talk, and finds that her speech is only an unintelligible jumble. She begins to get mad from then on. When I ask; her if I am hurting her she can only glare at me and shake her head. When I pass a. remark about the beautiful weaâ€" tl'er we have been having she glarcs siill more. and by the time I am through with her she is ready to kill me if looks would do the deed. Some- times, when I take the shield off, the pent up speech of the fair ones breaks forth into an irrepressible flood, and the portent of the remarks is, to say the least, not complimentary to me, “Some day some genius will iii- vent an apparatus which will allow teeth to be filled Without depriving the patients of their speech for the time being. Then there will be no- thing to this business but brOWn stone fronts and automobiles." ..._.____+_.. RECORD SCHOOL ATTENDANCE. Remarkable records in attendance ware disclosed at the prize distribuâ€" tion in the South Lincolnshire cic- mentary schools. says the London Exkress. At ‘Dorrington two girls each received a gold Watch for at- tending school for seven consecutive years without being absent once. A boy at Spalding Central Schools had attended school six years, two; boys attended five years and eight boys attended four years Without a break. In the Girls’ Central School in the same town one scholar attended sevâ€" en years, another six years and others five and four years without a. single absence. -â€"â€"â€"-â€"+â€"--â€"-â€"â€"« A dainty little silkâ€"covered book decorated with snowdrops on a pink groundwork, has an index at the side and a. tiny pink pencil dangling from 5. bit of pink ribbon. Simple hopes and ambitions. bounded by the desire to do good to oue's neighbors, simple pleasures, habits, food and drink. Men the long before their time beâ€" cause they try to crowd too much into their experiencesâ€"they climb too high and fall too hard. A Wise woman writes of the good that a simple diet has done her: "I have been using Grapeâ€"Nuts for about six months. I began rather sparingly, until I acquired such a liking for it that for the last three months I have depended upon it alâ€" most entirely for my diet, eating nothing else whatever, but. Grapeâ€" Nuts for breakfast and supper, and I believe I could eat it for dinner with fruit and be satisfied without other food, and feel much better and have more strength to do my housework. “When I began the use of Grape- Nuto I was thin and weak, my mus- cles were so soft that I was not able to do any work. I weighed only 108 pouuds. Nothing that I ate did me any good. I was going down hill rapidly, was nervous and miserable, with no ambition for anyâ€" thing. My condition improved rap- idly after I began to eat Grape-Nuts food. It made me feel like a new woman; my muscles got solid, my figure rounded out. my weight in- creased to 126 pounds in a few weeks, my nerves grew steady and my mind better and clearer. WOOD ALCOHOL IN RUSSIA. Thirtyâ€"seven Deaths Attributed to Its Use Last Year. The subject of wood alcohol pois- oning has again cropped up, this time in Russia. When Russian troops were being mobilized last summer at Dorpat the event was made the oc- casion" for drinking, and men and women partook freely of a beverage composed, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association, of alcohol, water, peppermint leaves, salvia, lavender, etc. Like Jamaica ginger, this beverage is much affectâ€" ed by the Livonians as an internal remedy. Similarly, it is used as a. stimulating drink in default of the ordinary alcohol beverages. Unfortunately for the Russian merry-makers, the stufl‘ was made with wood alcohol instead of grain alcohol, the consequence being that sixteen men and one woman 'died as a, result of the debauch. It is sug- gested that the alcohol used was probably of the deodorized kind. More recently a report has come from Russia. that twenty persons have died at Kief from drinking methylated brandy. It is only within the last year that wood alcohol poil'Ouing has occurred in Russia. Up to the year 1901 the wood alcohol used in Russia. was so repugnant to the Senses of smell and taste that even the ignorant peasâ€" ants, who will drink the vilest and strongest forms of spirits, could not use it as a beverage. In the early part of 1904. the 'dco- dorized wood alcohols were introduc- ed into Russia, in consequence of which there have been already thir- ,ty-seven deaths reported. As here, wood alcohol, owing to iits comparative cheapuess, seems to llmve been largely substituted in Rusâ€"' Isia. for grain alcohol in the manufac- ture of remedial agents, flavoring extracts, perfumes, liuiments, witch hazel, etc. __.._* I When a wmnan cries it is a Sign you can’t guess whether it is be.- jcausc she is glad or sad.
