(71's are putting up a driving shed for Mr. .Wnltér Howie. Mr. A. E Minthorne has not been very well for a couple of weeks, and early last Sunday morning he suffered a. relapse. Dr. Graham, of the Falls, was sent for. and under his care the pa- tient is improving. Mr. Thomas Lane. of Fenelon Falls, has finished a stone foundation under a burn for Mr. James Wager. and a fine piece of masonry it is. If there is any one wanting a good job alone: this line, we would advise him to consult Mr. Lane. An automobile passed through here on Saturday, the let of July, and re- turned on Monday morning, very nearly wreckingr the cream wngqon. Hons AGAINâ€"Our Volunteers came home on Saturday from their fortnight’s drill at Kingston, all in good health and spirits. fl‘his year the weather was un- favorable, owing; to the frequent rains and the heat, which on two or three days was so intense as to be almost un- end-nrable; but the officers and privates all did their best, and we hope they will have-better weather next year. Fth THE CHURCH.â€"Go to the enter tuinment in the Presbyterian church shis‘ovening, full particulars of which are given in the bills scattered through- out the village, and you will get some idea'of the horrible lives led, through no fault of their own, by thousands of human beincs'in the slums of the most wealthy cities of the world. Admission: adults 15 cents; children 10 Gents. The church ouuht to be filed to its doors. THE waLr'rn.â€"â€"-A big crowd assem- bled at the 12th of July Celebration at Omemoe on Wednesday, a good many of them. ofceurse. being spectators from the surrounding country. There was a little rain there in the forcnorm and a steady down-pour after dinner for about. two hours; but the enthusiasm can ’t- be Washed out. of an Orangeman, and the usual programme was carried out in its entirety. Col. Sum Hughes being one of the chief speakers. Tue Rneonn BltoKEN.â€"- The local big fish record held by the lungs weigh- in;r 19-le. 9 oz. caught something: over a mile below the Falls, on the 16th ult, was broken on Friday last by one that weighed exactly 20 lbs., captured in Cameron lake by Mr. Charles 'l‘obicoe. Now, then, who can beat it? The In- dependent says that a 24 poundor was caght below ’Caygcon a few days ago, and we are just achinqto hear of some- body catching one a pound or two heavv ier in our immediate vicinity. A NARROW Esoarn â€"-â€"On Friday morning lust Mr. Robert Jackett, an old and well-known resident of the village, had a narrow escape from drowning, in the little creek that crosses Francis Street cast, a few rods from the resi- dence of his son Frederick, with Whom he has been staying for thepast two or three weeks. The creek, though very shallow, flaws over a deep bed of black muck, and a narrow three-inch plank lay across-it. Early in the morningthe two men went out of the house, and soon afterwards the eltiler walked to wards the creek, leaving: the other busy about the promises. A few minutes litter Fred looked around for his father, and. to his dismay, saw him lying face downward in the creek, and. rushing: to the spot, lifted him up and laid him upon his back; but Mr. Glaspell. his ' nenrest neighbor, who arrived a minute or two later and knew the right thing to do, turned him over. and Mr. Fred » Metcalfe, another neighbor, mounted his wheel and rode up town for a doctor. The .old gentleman had slipped while crossing the plank, which was under his thighs; and the muck was so deep and soft that his arms went down in it nlmo-t to his shoulders and he could not help himself in the least. He was insmisible when rescued. but had recov- cred sufficientlv to stand up before the arrival of Dr. Graham, who said that if help had arrived a minute or two later than it did'he would have been dead. .._.__.â€"___-â€"__ CORRESPONDENCE . To tho Editor of Me Fenelon. Falls Gazette : Will you kindly publish the following letter: THE NAME OF JESUS. “ His name shall be called Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins." wBiole. “- Jesus, the name high over all: In hell, or earth, or sky; Angels and men before it fall, , And devils fear and fly.” -.Poc!.. We reached our home on May street about 9:20 on Tuesday night and set down under the verandah to enjoy a. breath of'frcsh air and a rest. A jargon of unintelligible sounds, oft. repeated, across the street, was somewhat annoying, but we would not complain of'that. We recognized the voice of one boy, and also of his mother, who seemed to be enjoying- the hilarious sport. Presently our sensibilities were shocked by the boy shouting,r out, “ Jesus,,lover of-my soul, Help me climb the greasy pole,” and an attempt to finish the verse bye still. more blasphemous parody on. the 3 SALE a .a take them. 31ml: CHEAP ST GENERAL STORE lh‘ THE COURTY. E‘f’l ( x bl '1 c. a» sacred and revered hymn. This was re- peated many times, and we thought we heard a mild but unheetled protest in the voice of the mother. We have often seen mother and boy at church, and we think the boy attends a Sunday school. Talk about darkest Africa. the dark side of London and New York, but anything dark- er than we‘have frequently seen occurring in Fenelon Falls we do not wish to meet. The church having practically failed, we can think of no remedy except to turn on the light through the press as fully as pos- sible, and make the ofl‘enders feel the odium that attaches to such evils in the judgment of self-respecting and God-fearing citizens.
