."'_'.-.x. 7...": . ,. - -... v. .-.- ,,_-__ Dairy Wisdom (In Brief. Every dairy utensil should be kept as scrupulously clean now as in the hottest weather. None but the best cows should get the good feed. Of course you don’t have none but the best cows. l Do not allow the cream to freeze. As a" rule, churning is put off too long in winter, and this is the cause of lots of trouble. Beautiful cows are not those that appear best on canvas in pictures, but . on the balance sheet in dollars and cents. Stopand think how many steps you might save yourself by having a place have poor feed, therefore you should Sony‘quSS, L x for each dairy utensil and keeping it there. Try it a few days and you nev- ‘er will go back to the old way. The calf should have whole milk the ï¬rst two weeks of its life. Then begin ireducing the quantity of whole milk and add a little shorts or oilmeal. When . .ï¬ve or six weeks old it should be sub‘ sisting wholly on skim milk, shorts and hay. Cold may cause a big appetite, but if 'the food is all used in ï¬ghting the cold there will be very little left to increase the milk flow. Just take notice. There is a big difference between a cold and a warm stable. One means comfort and proï¬t, and the other means loss. " Promote the cows that do not come up to the average yield of the herd. Give them a walk Off the farm. Re- place them with cows that can and do keep above the average yield. Cows that are compelled to wade in mud and manure half knee deep, sleep ‘ under the open sky and eat corn and prairie hay cannot be expected to pro- duce much milk. Cows must be well efed if they give any, considerable ,quantity of milk. Very rich cream is quit-3 apt to paste 'or thicken in the churn, so that the concussion ceases. This can usually be corrected by adding enough water at the same temperature as the cream to dilute it so it will drop Most cows begin to fail in their milk about three months after calving. Careful feeding and persistent milking is the only way to overcome this ten- dency. A cow once allowed {to fail in her milk is very hard to get back to the normal yield. . ,2 ;- :35- ..~ a... . - .Jr... 2.-.-.. .l ‘ELISHA MARK, Cool: Wanted.
