NEIGHBORHOOD A Haliburton (Correspondence of the lGuzctte ) In looking over the various items of news in your newsy little paper, I notice the absence of- any remarks in connec- tion with our progressive little burg. This, I presume, is owing to the fact that but few of us trouble ourselves to make known through the columns of the press the claims of this portion of Ontario. I am‘well aware that many persons living in the frontier towns far to the south are in blissful ignorance of our exact geo- ‘ :. graphical position. For the imformation of those I may, at some future time, dilate on the beauties of our lakes, rivers, mountains and magniï¬cent ‘scon- ery, the position we occupy with regard to the equator, our great elevation above the level of the sea, etc., etc. The village is considered by many vis- itors as one of the most charming holi- “day resorts that Ontario can furnish. Of course in the winter season business does not move with that “ vim " which is noticeable in the other seasons. The mills are closed and’ the hum of the saws is quiet until winter gives place to spring. Lumbering operations are car- ried on here very extensively by Laking- Bryan & Austin Bros. The cut this year is expected to be in advance of any pre- vious year. Our merchants, too, are doing a good trade. Of course they are all conscientious men, and sell goods at a reasonable figure. We have two up-to- date medical practitioners, who take the greatest possible interest in looking after the health of the citizens. The ed- ucation of the juvenile portion of the population is looked after by two teach- ers. The leading religious denominations are all represented here, viz. Anglican, Baptist, Presbyterian and Methodist, and the congregations are punctual and at- tentive. The accommodation of the travelling public is looked after by M r. McKenzie, formerly of Kinmount, but now of the Grand Central, and Mr. Watt, of the “Watt House," which is a large airy building commanding an excellent view of the wharf and railway station. Our barber is avcry flue fellow, and takes great pains in shaving all who favor him with a call. The post oilice department is presided over by our esteemed post- master, Mr. Dover, and his accomplished assistant. ' Our branch of the Sterling Bank which is under the care of Mr. Borrett, its able and obiiging manager, may be numbered among the flourishing institutions of the place. There are numerous other trades and occupations carried on here, but, being uncertain as to the fate of my communiâ€" cation on its arrival at the oilice, I shall for the present draw to a close. Of course your " devil " or some other per- sonage may consign this M S. to the waste paper basket and hence to the flames. In that case you may never hear from me again. ' POCAIIONTAS. 6-. It takes only 86 representatives from Ontario to'see after the affairs of this Province at Ottawa; but Premier Whit- ney proposes to give Ontario 106 repre- sentatives in the Local House. Had he determined to cut down the number in- stead of increasing it, it would have been far been for the people's pockets. In one way and another, from the town- ship council to the Federal House, we are about represented to death. Mr. A. Hero has been building a very neat and substantial veranda for Messrs. Cullis &. Lane. Mr. H. is a good mechan- ic and gives good satisfaction. Mr. John S. Brown delivered live or six fat cattle last Tuesday toAMr. Paul Oui- lett-e, of Fenelon Falls. Some of the cellars in this vicinity have a considerable quantity of water in them. Tiie'ratcpayers in this school section will now know how the water found its way into the basement of the school-house about two or three years ago. Some. of the ratepayers accused the care-taker of letting the water run in, so that he would get the job of taking it out again, which occupied two days at 50 cents a day. The trustees, can have the dollar back again if they want it. Mr. Bert Sims, of Owen Sound, is home on a visit to his parents.
