Human society to-day in all civi- lized states is armed with powers of wealth production such as were never dreamed of a century ago. To proâ€" duce sufficient of the material things of life to provide for the comfortable existence of man to-da', is a matter of the expenditure of such an insignif- icant amount of labor as to be scarce worth mentioning. If the powers of production were to be used to their “limit, such a volume of wealth would result that the markets of the world would be deluged with it, and human society actually smothered in its own products. And yet, in the face of all this, industry is paralysed, factories are closed or running with reduced force, and millions of men are without employment and know not which way .. _.. __J “-m _ -mn : -..~..--.. . ..- “a. 1. "trues-:- "h - . -- :3" 1 Everything must grow or die. Cap-r italism is no exception to the rule. Capitalist production cannot continue unless capital can expand. Its pun pose is the augmentation of capital. This implies that additional markets â€"-â€"tuat is, additional markets into which it may expandâ€"are always available. \Vhen such fields are no longer available the jig is up. Death must inevitably follow. This, howev- er, does not imply that its death need be sudden, like that of a packing-house slave dropped into a vat of“ boiling lard. It will begin to decay. It will smell bad in spots. It will become ir- ritable and savage, just like an old dog who, becoming blind with age, snaps and snarls at every one who points a finger at him. It does not require much of a prophet to see that capitalist production is nearing its end. It can no longer be carried on, except by fits and starts. Just now it is at flieted with the rickets. A little later on it will be chronic St. Vitus’s Dance. Still later, the obsequies. Glory be ! In ' the meantime, the proletariat must suffer untold miseries and hard-1‘ ships. Everything is out of joint, and, where peace and decency should dwell, there will be turmoil and strife, riot aad bloodshed. Bloated affluence will automobile the boulevards, while gaunt poverty skulks in the alleys. A few million more wageâ€"slaves of various ages and both sexes will be ground in;- to profit. A few million more women ' will be driven to lives of shame. Here and there a bunch of discarded slaves- with empty bellies and heads with no- thing in them worth mentioning, will have national anthems played upon their caputs with policemen’s clubs. ' All around, it is a pleasing aspects-t Vancouver, B. 0., Western Clarion. 0-. The Same Everywhere. From every quar- ter comes indisputable evidence that, bad as conditions have been for the past six months, they are becoming intensified each day. The future is dark with forebodings of such a cata- clysm of disaster that capitalist civili- zation will crumble to ruins. Even now it is rocking upon its foundation, like a doomed building in the face of a gale that it cannot withstand. Even if capitalist production does weather the present storm, it is safe to assert that no living man will ever see it again restored to that condition of ac- tivity and virility experienced during the past ten years. The production has become too great to admit of the product being disposed of even in the world’s market. Proof of this is found in the present world-wide industrial depression and stagnation. If the pro- duct could be disposed of, there would . not be an idle man in Christendom. Every factory would be running night and day. Every capitalist’s face would be adorned with a seraphie smile in comparison to which a clown’s grin There is no use in blinding our eyes Nothing. What will it do? Nothing“ What can a capitalist congress do in such a crisis? Nothing. Will congress therefore adjourn? Oh, no; there are salaries to be drawn and a quantity of hot air to be delivered; and, in the meantime, the unemployed millions and starving thousands may feed upon the recollection of how they voted in 1904 and 1906; and, if this drastic diet does not train their stomachs to serve them 'more intelligently at the ballot box this year than their brains have served them heretofore, there will have to be a radical revision of the law of economic determinism.-â€"« Appeal to Reason. -c Says the Socialist agitator to the wage-slave : “ I shall light a candle of understanding in thine heart that ‘ shall never be put out.” Some people are so constituted that they would rather be a rich man’s dog than assert themselves in defence of their rights. Such were born to be slaves, and have no ambition to be other than hirelings. The capitalist system is good enough for them, and would appear like the piously sombre anything else would be too good. 36 A. strong, conservative, sive bank for progr A Checking Account prov paying your bills, as each check issued return . unis opened with reliable farmers who reqrire ready Loan Acco money at this season.
