Mr. Carnegie iiiectedby Acclamation. At the nomination of candidates to represent the electoral district of East Victoria in the Ontario Legislature, held, according to proclamation, in Dickson’s hall, Fenelon Falls, on Mon- day last, Mr. J. H. Carnegie, who has represented the riding during the last three parliaments, was the only nomi- nee ; and the returning officer, Mr. V7. J. Read, therefore declared him elected by acclamation. Consequently, there will be no contest here this time. There was no speech‘making at the . nomination, except a few words said by the member, and the proceedings lasted a very short time. W. _. _. Women s institute. The annual meeting of the East Vicâ€" toria Women’s Institute was he‘d in Dickson's hall‘ last Friday afternoon, May 29th, and was well attended. The secretary, Miss Nie, read the minutes of last meeting, which were adopted. The secretary's report showed a membership of forty, and a cash balance on hand of $5.58. The election of oilicers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: .res- ident, Mrs. Dr. Gould ; vice-president, Mrs. Moynes ; secretary, Miss Nic; directors, Mrs. Townley, Mrs. Wm. Bur- goyne, Miss Poulsom and Miss Thurston ; auditors, Miss Haskell and Mrs. D. Jewell. A vote of thanks was tendered Mrs. Fell, the retiring president, who had filled the office most acceptably for the past seven years, and much regret was expressed at her resignation. Mrs. v Fell replied in a few well-chosen words, stating that she had only done what seemed her duty, and was sure her suc- cessor would prove herself to be quite as capable of filling the office satisfac- torily. It was moved by Mrs. Gould, seconded by Miss Cullis, and carried un- animously, that the members of this institute much regret the loss of a val- ued member in the person of Mrs. R. J. Moore, who is shortly leaving town with her family to reside in Lindsay. Mrs. Moore made a suitable reply, expressing regret at leaving, and assuring all the members that she would look back on the Women’s Institute meetings at Fen- elon Falls as very happy and interesting .events, and, as she .is not to be very far away, she hoped to sometimes attend them in the future. The annual Guelph delegate’s meeting is to be held at the Falls on June 25th, at which Miss Gray, of Toronto, and Miss Helen McMurehy, of Waterloo, are expected to give dem- onstrations in cookery. - __...._..__..__...... . Resolution of At a meetingof Court Fenelon Falls No. 026, Canadian Order of Foresters, the secretary was instructed to transmit the following letter of sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Torrance: To Mr. and Mrs. Torrance, Fenelon Falls. I am instructed by the unanimous resâ€" olution of Court Fenelon Falls No. 026, to write you expressing the deep sym- pathy felt by this Court for yourselves, in this hour of your aliliction, on the occasion of the loss of our late brother and‘ your son. That the Supreme Ruler of the universe may have you ever in His keeping is the sincere prayer of his brethern in this Court. Yours in sympathy, HARRY LITTLETON, Rec. Sec Farm Drainage Demonstration. The Department of Physics at the On- tario Agricultural College desires to an- nounce the continuance of its previous offer of assistance to farmers in matters pertaining to d rainage. For the past three years we have been authorized by the Minister of Agriculture to go out and assist any farmer in taking the level of his lands for drainage purposes, in planning the most advantageous systems of drains, and in calculating the grades and sizes of tile for the drains. A finish- ed map hearing all the information is sent to the owner. This serves two pur- poses : first. it is used as a guide in con- structing the drains ; second, it may be preserved as a record of the exact locaâ€" tion of every drain, so that if for any reason it should be necessary in years to come to find any drain, it could be done accurately at a. moment’s notice.. The number of applications for assisstâ€" ance has increased very rapidly, so that we had many more than we could attend to. To enable us to meet this increased demand, the Minister of Agriculture has this year given us a special appropria- tion whereby we have been enabled to double our staff for this work. A new feature is being added: We have found in the past that frequently the neigh- bors in the vicinity of the farm being surveyed were interested and wished to observe the operation-s. This suggested the desirability of making these demon- strations public, and this will be done wherever possible. Anyone interested will be welcome on all occasions. By' this means we slall be able to instruct a much larger number in matters pertain- ing to drainage problems. Anyone wish- ing drainage surveying done should apply to Wm. H. Day, Department of Physics, 0. A. C., Guelph.
