STRANGERS HELP TO QUENCII THE FLAMES. ___. Travellers Come Upon a Burning Bridge and Find Strange Sights. Following the main road we found it only thirty miles northâ€" west, to the Fu city of Yuencheo, but several passes had to be climb- ed, the days were not, and in spite of the 1,000 or more feet of altitude we were nearly roasted, entirely tired out and looking for a couple of days of rest with fellow foreignâ€" ers. Little did we dream of getting the most ‘unusual ï¬re experience that we did, says a correspondent of the Shanghai Mercury. It was a Saturday morning and the ï¬rst Slay of the Chinese ï¬fth month or ‘nioon," when everybody must have out a lighted candle and inâ€" cense. for some one, no one knows who if you ask them. It is “anci- ent custom†and that settles it. We had just crossed the long fourâ€" teen span bridge which connects the City With its busy western suburb, called Kiangsi Street, and had noâ€" ticed blazing candles, one or more in front of each of the 108 shops .or booths lining the bridge on both I sides. The bridge and booths seemed to be all of wood, and it was remarked that this looked somewhat danger- ous. However, a nice inn was found at the end of the bridge which had a back veranda facing the river and giving a good view of the bridge. As usual with sights seemingly worth it, we took a SNAPSHOT OF THE BRIDGE, put the camera back in the box, were soon more presentable for city life and found our way to the hospitable mission compound in the middle of the city. As usual 3. ofï¬cial helping to quell the ï¬re, and that with only about twenty soldi- ers, the writer hurried to them, snapped two more pictures of the bridge burning, sent the goods and hands of the six or seven foreign- ers here. These were all of the Ger- man branch of the C. I. M., and ' we were just enjoying breakfast and telling and receiving all the news when the ï¬re trumpets were sounded. Soldiers ’ were parading the streets and warning the people that a ï¬re was on, and that they should be watchful. This is doubly neces- sary here, as so much wood is used in construction, being the cheapest ina‘..crial at hand, and ï¬res get fear- ful headway and burn out very rap- idly. The miosiouarics, having a lpunip and hose for self-protection, sometimes go to big tires, where they can be of help. In this case breakfast was for- :. l {gotten by every one, the Pump and hose got ready, and by this time some one said it was the bridge that was on ï¬re. This being near the personal effects of the writer, and .(-f special interest now, a 11111 ried lvisit was made, in the wake of the “Gospel Hall Fire Department,†and sure enough, there was the - lgieat crowded bridge a mass of flames in the centre, where the candles had been thickets, in front 0c the idol, and there seemed no (‘1 the bridge itself. THE PUMP AND HOSE were soon go to work, and did splendid work for their size, but there were three men to manage that, and the writer seemed to be of no use. Hearing that the Hsien Mandarin who should come to such ï¬res and supersiso some effective measures was absent on business in the country, and that the two other pumps native owned) in the city were not coming, and also not- ing that there was but one small ' ‘hope of saving the 100 odd shops l the coolies into the city and himself appeared on the scene in straw san- dals, short clothes, and with a large wet towel wound around the head, held in place by the useful queue. A great ï¬re brigade we all were, not an axe, saw or hardly a pail among us all! A raid was again made on my friend the .innkeeper, and down in the basement a two foot coal poker was found, while next door we com- mandeered a small pail from an cld lady. The poker was not much for power and the pail was small and lonesome, but a. big noise was made on the light woodwork of the four booths (two on each side) we were trying to get out, and the tiles flow as well. The pump and poker inspired the soldiers, and the ï¬re was stopped at the east end of the bridge, to the good wetting of the flooring by the G. F. D. “'1‘ Where can I get some of Hello- way’s Corn Cure? I was entirely cured of my corns by this remeuy and I wish some more of it for my friends. So writes Mr. J. W. Brown, Chicago.
