'JACOBITES STILL EXlST AFRICA" lANNUALLr, CELEBRATE MEM- ORY 0F KING CHARLES I. ming Edward Has a Rival to the Throne of Great Britain, in Their Opinion. Many anniversaries are celebrat- led each year in London. The ob- lservances are sometimes quaint, gsometimes interesting, but in no lease are they more extraordinary lthan the proceedings on January '39th in memory of the execution of ;K_ing Charles I. at Whitehall in 31649. 'g For on this date a number of Briâ€" tons annually demonstrate their loyalty not to King Edward, but to another, whom they are pleased to designate the “Sovereign over the Water†I ' CLAIMS DESCENT FROM CHARLES I. That King Edward has a rival will come as a surprise to many. Most of us are under the impres- sion that the unfortunate house of Stuart ended with Bonnie Prince Charlie and his broth-er, Prince Henry, who both died without heirs in the reign of George III. How- ever, in Bavaria there is a. princess, Maria Teresa .by name, who stands nearer to the old Stuart line than even our good King Edward. This princess claims descent from Charles I., while King Edward to prove that he has Stuart blood in his veins has to go a generation further back to King James. It is this fact which, in the eyes of those Britons to whom allusion has been made, makes his claim to our throne much weaker than that of the Bavarian princess, and which incites them to hail the latter as the legitimate Sovereign. of these realms. ' But, granting all that, these Briâ€" tons, who claim to be the true des- cendants of the eighteenth-century Jacobites, shut their eyes to the fact that ours is a constitutional monarchy, and the branch of the Stuart family to which the Prinâ€" cess Maria belongs was excluded from the throne- by Act of Parlia fment as long ago as the year, 1700. HAVE MANY CLUBS. The J a-cobites of the present day do not make themselves venry conâ€" spicuous as individuals, but conâ€" tent‘themselves with advertising their political opinions through the clubs with which they are associâ€" ated, such as the Thames Valley Legitimists, the White Cockade Le- gitimists, and the Legitimists Order of St. Germaine. ' g - As indicated, the day on which they annually demonstrate their peculiar political beliefs is J anu- ary 30th, and their favorite me~ thod of expressing their loyalty to the “Sovereign over the Water†consists in placing beautiful floral wreaths on the equestrian statute of Charles I. which stands at the south side of Trafalgar Square, looking towards Whitehall. , Up till recently little attention was paid by the authorities to the sentiments expressed on these wreaths. Latterly‘some became so seditious in tone that the Governâ€" ment very properly intervened, and now no memorial can be laid on King Charles’ statue unless it has ï¬rst been approved by an ofï¬cial censor. The various wreaths usually con- tain the word “Remember.†As students of history know, this was the last word uttered by King Charles, and was addressed to Bishop J uxon, who accompanies. him to the scaffold. WHAT DID THE KING MEAN? Today this word is one of the enigmas of history. What did the :King mean by “Rem-ember†’2 The Roundheads who superin'tended the execution jumped to the conclusion that His Majesty had conï¬ded some State secret to J oxenâ€"perhaps a plot to overthrow the newlyâ€"estab- lished Commonwealth, which the ISSUE N0. 23~~03 Bishop was to convey to the Cava- liers; and instantly they pressed the poor clergyman to reveal the message he was commanded to re- member. With this request J uxon readily complied. His Majesty, he stated, had simply asked him to remind his son to pray for his father’s eneâ€" mies. . But this simple reply was scout- ed by the founders of the Common- wealth, who continued on their guard against unknown snares be- queathed by the unhappy Charles, with the result that their oppon- ents, the Cavaliers, seeing how scared they were by the word “Reâ€" member,â€.instant1y adopted it as a motto. ' In due time “Remember†became a wat-chword for the J acobites, who see in it a. command to remember their allegiance to the “Sovereign over the Water.†â€"Pearaso-n’s Week- ly. 3‘ ONE OF THE REGULARS. , During the encampment of sever- al regiments of British soldiers in a lcertain district the wood and turf used for cooking purposes were carted by the neighboring farmers. One day a donkey cart- ful of turf was brought in, the driv- er being a country lad. 'As a re- gimental band was playing he stood in front of the donkey and held the animal tightly by the head. Some of the “smart ones†gathered around, highly pleased, and the wit of the party asked why he “held his brother so tightly.†The reply was crushing: “I’m afraid he might enlist.†On an average 26,000 letters are posted without addreses in England every year. â€"â€".â€"â€".~ Of all birds, the “frigate bird†can travel the fastest.
