A great howl is going up through- out the length and breadth of Canada. for patriotism. The newspapers are howling for soldiers and guns and batâ€" tleships, and all under the pretense of patriotism. Why should Canadian workingmen and farmers want to tax themselves with an army? Patriotism, on the lips of our government ofï¬cials means protection for the plunderbund. On all sides we see the formation of the trusts and the machinery for plun- dering the people. Foreign plunderers are pushing to the feast. Canadian labor is being plucked. The men who are howling for guns and ships and soldiers care nothing for the welfare of the Canadian 'people. Our farmers pile mortgages against their little farms and the plunderers rejoice. The men whose strong arms build the rail- roads and dig the mines can starve, and the ï¬nanciers and their govern- ment assistants do not mind. But the men who are being plun- dered object; and the men who are plundering them must devise schemes in order that their revenues may be protected against the indignation of the plundered. These plunderers are glad when a war breaks out. Of course the labor thieves dare not ad~ mit their real sentiments , so they talk of patriotism, and endeavor to invei- gle the plundered into the belief that some foreign country is about to fall upon Canada and eat her up. And the poor fools who serve as meat to the plunderers listen open mouthed to the bogey stories told them. They do not realize that the ï¬nanciers of Canada have sold out Canadian indus- tries to the foreigners. Of twelve mil- lion dollars paid by the C. P. R. in dividends, ten millions went abroad. The ‘Dominion Iron d: Steel Company is owned by Americans. The capitalist newspapers Chortle with joy whenever another Canadian industry is bound and mortgaged to foreign money lords. When will you yaps who do the work and get skinned learn that the patriots who suck your blood are hyp- ocrites? When will you learn that this talk of patriotism is merely a blind to keep you fellows stirred up , against Germany, while the capitalists of Canada are stealing you blind. As long as you can be made to hurrah for an army of men who plunder you, they will be glad. But just as soon as you stop hurrahing and begin to ask where the money is going, the capitalists will ï¬nd out that you are getting wise- to ..the Eskin game being played upon you. Never fear, the trust magnates and railroad barons and cheap Ottawa politicians have their eyes on you. And they are all scared to death lest you fellows should Tilt“. 73 Years in Business. is l The Saving Habit at highest current rates. It is do~ ing so at present to a limited extend The Montreal Street Railway also wants to remove the snow in winter from the streets along which its cars: pass. The Street Railway can handle: the freight with less labor than teams ‘ of horses can. Because the workers will be thrown out of employment if the Street Railway carries the freight- and handles the snow, the working- men object and want antiquated meth- ods continund. The labor thieves who Own express waggons are also ï¬ghting. for the continuance of the old meth- ods. They do not want to see their proï¬ts disappear. The ï¬ght of the- workingmen and of the express ownâ€" ers is doomed todefeat. Their mode of transportation has become unnecesâ€" sary. The express owners are going to be wiped out of business, and their employees will lose their jobs. Undeu capitalism the workers will haunt the streets looking for jobs which they can’t ï¬nd. Let the workingmen and‘ the little capitalists who run express- services realize their only hope of sal- vation is the public ownership of the‘ street railway property, with the men who do the work running it in the interests of themselves. The Montâ€" real Street Railway Company has, by its method of doing business, taken away the jobs from many cab drivers, and it is about to take the jobs away from many snow shovellers, freight handlers and teamsters. Let these men whose jobs have been taken away from them organize themselves politi- cally under the red banner of social- ism, and run the street railway for the beneï¬t of all who will work. Cap- italism, with its hunt for profit, can- not solve the problem of unemploy- ment 3 it produces it. Socialism, with its principles of production for use and not for proï¬t, is the only 1'emedy.~ -â€"Ibid. 0+0 The Growing Menace. John H. \Vrenn, head of the big \Vall street banking house bearing his name, has just returned from a trip of several weeks in Europe. He says: “Everybody in ï¬nancial circles in England is becoming seriously fright: ened at the growth of Socialism fir- that country. '1 had alway supposed: England was ï¬rmly based on aristoc- racy, but my recent visit compels me to believe that that power has been almost destroyed. Europe has turned to America for its investments, and is placing a deal of money here, seeming to feel that it is to-day the safest- na- tion from a. olitical'stand oint of an ’ 1 b ) on earth.
