It has been shown that Brother Char- ley has received contracts for supply- ing the workers on the Panama canal with meat, which looks like maintain- ing a family graft. It has been shown that Brother Charley employs a large number of Mexican laborers, which is proves that it runs in the Taft family to encourage Americn labor and high wages. It has been shown that Broth- en Charley has not been on his farm for nine years, which is proof that the capitalist is absolutely nonessen- tial to production.‘ Nevertheless, in spite of‘all these things, Charles P. Taft is demonstrating a very import- ant matter on his Texas ranch, and is thus aiding the people by proving the practicability of Socialism ! This is a fulfilment of the Socialist forecast of syndicate farming. It will demonstrate the wastefulncss of farm- ing on a small scale and of selling the raw product. It will make Taft a multiâ€"millionaire, and, under the capâ€" italist profit system, will make him a feudal lord, dictating the lives of thousands of employees' It is real capitalist farming. Fifty years ago manufacture was where farming is now, largely an indi- vidualistic industry. Within that time manufacture has been transform- ed into a. thing of vast; capital and in; numerable small savings. As a re- sult, manufacture has arisen from a place where its product was less than a third that of farming to a point where its product, with less than a. fourth as many engaged and less capi- tal employed, is more than twice that of all the farms of America ! It is purely a matter of method. Apply the same rules to farming that have been applied to manufacture, the same saving, the same use of improved machinery, and the farms of America may be made to produce at least ten times as much as they do now. Taft is preparing to demonstrate this fact in a way that no man has ever done before. The Appeal is sorry to see the dmnonstration made under capiâ€" talism, for the reason that in this case the rewards go to the few and the many receive almost nothing. But if men will not believe or be warned by the Socialists, it were better that the demonstration be made under capital- ism than that it be not made at all. Jim Hill’s cry that farming must be made more scintific, means that he sees the possibility, and would call the at- tention of capitalists to the money to be made from syndicate farming. The inevitable result of this kind of farming will be just what it was in the line of manufacture. It will ef~ but it will also put the proceeds into‘ the hands of the few, and reduce the real tillers of the soil to wage workers or “hired hands,” rte-establishing a sort - of feudal condition. Yet it will prove the possibility of cooperation in farm- ing, and thus call attention to the soundness of the Socialistic philosophy. It will, by reducing the tillers of the soil to wage workers or hopeless “in- dependents,” destroy the fiction of small capitalism doing the world’s work, and make their ii‘iterests clearly those of the proletariate. In this way‘ it will inevitably lead to a revolt main to Socialism. The Appeal would rath- er the people awakened to the situa- tion before they are called on to pass through this period of distress. lt would rather see the farming industry ' organized by the whole people and for their benefit, rather than by a few for their benefit. But if the farmers will not heed the warning, they will still learn the lesson by hard experience, and in the long run the result will he he same. Appeal to Reason, .04 The Squeezing Process. A drug trust has been formed in New York, and the Standard Oil Co. are said to be back of the combine. Henry H. Flagler, John D. Rockefclj ler, and other big Standard Oil men are known to be heavily interested in the large drug corporation now doing business in New York. Recently rep- resentatives of the United Drugr C01;- sumer’s Company have been visiting the retail druggists in Manhattan and the Bronx, trying to buy out the little fellows. \Vhen a hundred retail stores have been acquired, the United Drug Consumers’ Company will start busi- ness. The cigar stores have been comâ€" bined, and the drug stores are beiz’n; combined, and the general retail stores are being amalgan‘iated. This is the beginning of the process to squeeze the retailers out of business. When the various trusts have captured the vari- ous retail stores, the various trusts will merge into one trust. Then the smaller retail stores will be shut up. That will remove the cost of duplicate clerks and rent bills and insuram-J. charges and taxes. Then the retail stores will he closed altogether, and the goods will be sold by the sample). The process of trustification cannot be stopped. Competition is useless ililxl has to go. There must result either Socialism or industrial despotism.â€" Cotton’s \Vcckly. o-o-o In this world the black sheep often takes first prizé. Those whom men call strong are often only brutal. Socialism'is the l'iighest incentive. man has known, and will lead to high- fecl“ saving and increase Pi'OdUCtiOD, or attainments than he has ever made.
